discussingfilm.net/2019/04/11/love-simon-tv-series-in-development-for-disney-exclusive/Greg Berlanti’s well-received LGBTQ+ love story ‘Love, Simon’ from Fox was originally based on Becky Albertalli’s novel ‘Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda’. The film was led by Nick Robinson with Keiynan Lonsdale, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Josh Duhamel and Jennifer Garner making up the supporting cast of the 2017 film. Following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the rights for Becky Albertalli’s book have now transitioned over to the Mouse House and they intend to use the property again. According to my sources, Disney is set to develop a ‘Love, Simon’ TV series for the Disney+ streaming service. Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, who wrote the screenplay for the 2017 film, are set to executive produce the TV series. Production is being eyed to begin in August in Los Angeles. It is currently unknown whether the series will act as a sequel to the 2017 movie or will instead be a reboot and will retell the story once again. This is the second LGBTQ+-led show to be announced for Disney+ as the studio also announced a series titled ‘Four Dads.’ The series will focus on when two dads get divorced and then each remarry, they must navigate their new lives whilst raising their teenage daughters. It will begin filming on May 6th in Los Angeles. ‘Love, Simon’ joins a wide catalogue of shows and films being developed for Disney+ including the live-action adaption of ‘Lady and the Tramp’, ‘Book Of Enchantment’ as well as a range of Marvel and Star Wars shows currently in various stages of development. Disney+’s ‘Love, Simon’ will release in 2020.

This article gives more details and suggests this thread should have been started in the LESBIANS OF DAYTIME forum. tvline.com/2019/04/11/love-simon-tv-series-disney-streaming-service/It's based on the latest book in the series, Leah on the Offbeat, and will focus on Simon's friend Leah, a bisexual girl. Leah appeared in the Love, Simon movie but there will be a whole new cast for this series. Simon was only a supporting character in the book. I hope Disney+ title the new show Leah on the Offbeat if they want to follow the book to avoid deceiving gay fans of Love Simon into watching a show where gay boys are once more shoved to the sidelines.

Well, not as great as I thought. But you have to remember this is a series, not a complete adaptation of the book. They can have Simon and Blue just as a much as Leah if they want.

Maybe not as great, but it makes way more sense because Love, Simon was already an adapted film and the book is not that big to make something different with a tv show

If it's from Greg Berlanti it won't be any good anyway. Love Simon was so badly done many viewers were rooting for Simon to end up with his female best friend. He's also involved with the anti-gay material on Riverdale and Sabrina, IIRC.

Becky Albertalli has shared that the Disney+ series is not an adaptation of Leah on the Offbeat, the sequel to the novel that was Love, Simon but instead a series set in the world of Simon. The project will not be a remake of the movie either.

However, the screenwriters behind the Love, Simon film (and also the hit TV series This Is Us - which has a queer tween girl) are, so it may still be more of the same.

Because the article I read and linked above (TV Line is quite reliable) pointed to it being based on Leah on the Offbeat with Leah as the main character. "A series set in the world of Simon" seems to me a strong indicator that Simon is not the main character.

Thanks for the link, now that I see Becky's tweet about it being a "spin-off", it's pretty much confirmed Simon isn't going to be a major character.

Berlanti is a curious case.
He is out and proud, he hires a lot of gay actors, but he is terrible with gay storylines. He doesn't seem able to writer a compelling gay character even if his life depend of it.
Anway the number of openly gay writers who are terribly bad writing gay characters and storylines is not short

If this place in the same universe in as Love Simon but with out any of the characters from Love Simon, it is hard to really see what is so unique about this "universe" to base a TV show in. It seems like they could easily make a LGBT series without actually saying it is related to Love Simon in any way.
They should either recast the characters or just make a show "inspired" by Love Simon instead.

And people are going to fall for it, I guarantee you. The gays could be barely-there supporting characters and people will still lap it up and loudly declaim what a triumph it is for gay visibility.
I suppose we'll learn Disney's true intentions once a title and casting for the series are announced. Maybe. These days media executives are particularly cunning, verging on malicious, in the way they spread disinformation and false hope, inevitably always in service of gay erasure.

A spin of on the Love, Simon universe doesn't have any sense without the characters that were in the books and the movie.
They could make the focus of the tv not being on only one character but if all characters are new that has nothing to do with the Love, Simon universe at all.
This is Disney, so i don't expect a gay or a lesbian character, unless they go the sexless route of Andi Mack, and frankly that wouldn't work again.
You can't have both things, or you have gay character or not, but you can't have gay character, promote your show on gay media and then backburn the characters. That worked a decade ago, but not anymore.
Becky Albertalli is very gay friendly, but being a Disney show, i wouldn't have my hopes high

Well, this would normally be great news as it seems to buck the trend of erasing gay male leads from TV shows, but after the last year where the aforementioned trend has been in full swing the world over, I'm only cautiously optimistic. There will probably be a female or trans best friend cast as the "secondary" protagonist but who will have more airtime than Victor.

Still nothing that make me why it make sense to base this on Love, Simon instead of a new universe. Are they going to make one of the main characters called Simon? Otherwise, the show name "Love, Simon" is just really weird

Otherwise, the show name "Love, Simon" is just really weird I don't think the show is going to be called Love, Simon - it's just set in the same universe, which I presume means the same high school and maybe some crossover characters (although not Simon himself). They'll probably call it Love, Victor or something indicative like that.

The author has more novels with the same characters but with the focus on others beside Simon (he is a secondary character there).
I know his best friend is bisexual on the other novel and people claim that she was bi all the time, but i read Simon vs the homo sapiens agenda and frankly i didn't get that vibe at all (she seemed to be in love with their other friend, the one who was jew on the novel and black on the film)

Nice to get a bit more detail about the show. So it seems like Simon will be the show narrator. Since Nick Robinson will already be part of the show, I wonder if he will make any guest appearance too. Also, the synopsis mentioned that the main character will reach out to Simon for help.
I am feeling slightly better about this whole thing since they are doing more than I thought they would in terms of linking it to the movie.
