I've been reading a lot of posts at the imdb.com forum, and I understand things a little better now. I thought it was interesting that people like the way the writer/director left things up in the air. Some of the posters were saying the same thing you said, Louisa, that they like the ambiguity, and the fact that each time they watch the movie they find different things. I agree that it's always nice to discover new ideas, but that only works for people who buy the DVD. Pity the poor people who only get to see it once at the cinema, though, and walk out wondering what the heck was going on. ;D My understanding now is that Shaun may have had a crush on Zach when they were younger, and Zach probably hero-worshipped Shaun. Perhaps after reading Shaun's book, and discovering that Shaun was gay, made Zach question his feelings ... maybe producing the start of some different kinds of feelings. This idea makes it more feasible for the two of them to jump into a relationship so quickly ... it seemed odd that Shaun would just start kissing Zach out of the blue like that. And now I can also see how Jeanne worked out that the two were together. I did wonder if Zach's car was in the driveway when Gabe got home, but I thought he would've mentioned it ... and perhaps he told Tory. It may have helped if each of them said "I know, I saw your car/Shaun told me" or "I know, Cody told me you kissed Shaun ..." Whatever. I shouldn't be too nitpicky. Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching the movie again. I found the "making of" feature on YouTube, but I doubt I'll ever get to hear the commentary.

For me it's a good sign if I did not work out everything after I saw a film or read a book (for the first time) and if it makes me want to know more. And maybe I had some new experience and it made me see some scene differently or I finally understood something that was escaping me. It's more typical for a book, but it can work for a film, too. I like it when I am left to connect some dots.
Shaun and Zach were good friends, Zach knew Shaun since he was 8, so they were no strangers and knew each other very well. There were common interests, too, apart from surfing, they were both creative. And they realised they could take their friendship further. Zach always seemed to be interested/attracted to Shaun, he followed his career. Shaun realised that he liked Zach more than just a friend when he was watching the video. Suddenly the writer's block was gone and Zach felt inspired too.

I don't have any doubt that Shaun had something of a crush on Zach before they met again in the movie (as an aside, I absolutely love Zach's crooked little smile when Shaun finds him the first time in the movie). Like I've said, I love this movie and have become rather obsessed (too obsessed?) by it. I keep noticing small things everytime I watch it. This is a movie that is meant to be watched more than once. Unfortunately, my DVD has neither the "making of" feature or the commentary. I really wanted to hear the commentary, but I don't think that'll ever happen.

The commentary could be arranged, but you would have to just listen to it, or put it to your MP3 player and listen to it while playing the disc. I came across the US edition for free, but I thought I should give them some money and bought the UK edition as soon as it was out. I was disappointed it was just a single layer disc and they dropped the commentary, because they had less space on a disc. They should have dropped the 2:0 dolby sound instead

I watched it again today, and looked carefully at Shaun and Zack as they met again for the first time, and then watched each of their scenes after that, and I thought I could see some sort of prior connection between them that I'd missed the first time around. I really like Trevor White as Zach. I wasn't quite so taken by Brad Rowe. He was the one that seemed to hold back in the kissing scene that some people weren't happy with at the imdb.com forum. Trevor's acting was better there. I felt overall, he really was Zach, but I didn't feel that with Brad. He didn't seem as comfortable in his role. Just my humble opinion.

I thought they were both great even if that scene with first sex did not have the same passion like let's say VL

I thought Trevor was awesome and is definitely one to watch for the future. And...well I am in love lust with Brad Rowe so I am biased whenever he appears. Especially if he happens to have no t-shirt on (I am shameless).

At one stage Brad and Trevor are chatting, and Brad says he was so sick of Trevor at the end of the shooting, so over him, and Trevor agrees, then they ask "Why did we have breakfast together the next morning, then?"

I loved the commentary. They're both brilliant. I loved how at every other scene they were all like "oh and this is my favorite scene in the whole movie!" They all obviously had a great time making it and were enthusiastic about it.

I know I'm late to this particular bandwagon, but I finally watched this last night (twice, once with commentary). For being a low budget independent gay film, the quality (acting, cinematography, dialogue) were fantastic. And the story, while anchored in a "coming out" plot, was anything but. The family element is really what sold it for me. I didn't mind the "holes" that some people point out. I never questioned how people knew. It was very similar to my experience, especially that scene with Gabe and Zach, where the best friend just knows and you don't want to confirm it until they actually say they know. From the commentary, it seems the "break up" scene with Shaun and Zach was supposed to have happened in the house, but they lost the location. My guess is that after Zach ran off from the camp fire, Gabe went looking for him and stumbled across he and Shaun's conversation. I loved the juxtaposition of the three "worlds": San Pedro, Laguna, and surfing out on the water. And the art work that Ryan Graeff created for Zach was awesome. Yes, Jeanne was horrible, but I could totally understand her as a person who has been abandoned time and time again in her life. I'm not excusing her actions, but I'm always interested to know the human behind the inhuman actions. And I absolutely loved that Zach bought Cody new shoes for the date. My favourite scene of the movie was Zach driving home after the big love scene and slowly smiling. It was so beautiful with the sun coming in and just such a real moment. It contrasted so well with the similar shot when he left the morning after the first kiss earlier in the film.

It is a good scene, isn't it?
I'm so glad we're able to hear the actors/directors speak about their films now. I often enjoy that more than the movie itself. Or perhaps I should say that it really enhances the movie watching experience for me.

Although, as I mentioned in the chat thread, I love this film and don't need any excuse to talk about it. This scene however was just perfect.

I just saw this today...most of it, on youtube.
But i loved it and want to get the dvd now. Beautiful film. I also liked the bit after the love scene where Zach just starts smiling. It was also cute where Zach was talkign with Cody, and Cody kept saying that he thought of Zach as his dad. As to the part about how gabe knew, i thought he just put stuiff together. He does notice that Zach is wearing the shirt that Shaun had been wearing (and comments on it), and then Shaun would have been in a bad mood after the 'breakup' and Zach leaving early.
I thought this was an excellent film, and really touching. My fave part was the montage of Zach and Shaun together, cause they really looked like they have a great time together.
