Freddie just tweeted his airdates as promised in his last Q/A on twitter . Seems like the custody battles begins in May .

Ha, I just realized they got his girlfriend wrong. Jen, who is pictured with him, is his co-star from the Acme Theatre when he was doing Scandal Crest.
Perhaps I shouldn't even be commenting on this, but since the article did, I don't see why it's off-limits. His girlfriend's name is Alyssa.

Freddie is a very classy, intelligent guy. He's really set the standard for how a straight actor should handle playing a gay role.

Yes, the guy is inteligent. A guy (over 18) who plays a gay role is going to be questioned about his sexual orientation (and that's the reason a lot of gay actors in the closet don't want to play gay roles), and there's only a good way to handle that kind of question, being sincere and not showing gay panic. If you have a girlfriend, there's no reason to not casualy mention her. It's a lot better that way. Unfortunately it seems that journalist don't read the interviews and keep questioning the same things, but that's not the actor fault. In the end it's not that difficult, you only need to avoid the "kissing a guy is very hard", "i have absolutely nothing in common with the character", and trying to show how straight you are in every sentence (because that screams homophobe or closet case, or a combination of both). This is not the first time playing gay for Freddie (and probably it won't be the last, because there are some actor who really attract gay roles) and he is not only smart, he really knows what he is doing in the interviews (sometimes, specially with shy actors, interviews seems to spin out of control)

Personally, I hate it when an actor feels that they must state their sexual preference. It diminishes my enjoyment of that actor's performance because now I am focused on the fact that are indeed just acting. I really respect when actors who play LGBT roles tell the media that it's none of their damn business who they are sleeping with IRL.

I love Freddie interviews. He comes across as so devoted to playing Sonny and so devoted to his fans. Sure, it was mentioned that he has a girlfriend. But it wasn't overstated. It isn't a secret that he's been with his girlfriend for a while. They follow each other on twitter. But at least I don't get the feeling from him that he has to flaunt his girlfriend to make sure people know that he is straight in real life. Often times that happens with straight actors that play gay because they are scared of being typecast. If anything Freddie seems super secure in himself and why is constantly doing interviews on Sonny and Wilson. I have so much respect for that.

I really respect when actors who play LGBT roles tell the media that it's none of their damn business who they are sleeping with IRL. I have no arguments if actors feel like they want to tell the media to STFU where their significant others are concerned. At all. As a society, we are overly hungry for that kind of information, and it really shouldn't matter. However. With that said, just to be on equal footing here (because isn't that the point?), do you think Neil Patrick Harris should keep David Burtka in a closet somewhere so people buy his performance as Barney, who is straight, on How I Met Your Mother? Because I don't. I agree with Hawthorne that Freddie is a super classy guy. I see absolutely no hesitation with him and what he's asked to do in his role, so it doesn't bother me a lick to know he is straight and has a girlfriend (well, besides a little bit of jealousy! ) Why should he hide that he's in love? Some actors do go way over the stop to overstate, I've definitely been super annoyed before and it's obnoxious, but each person handles it differently and I don't think we should fault the ones who clearly refrain from that type of behavior, even when they're directly asked, which so far is the only case I've ever seen Freddie even really address that question. He doesn't bring that up himself very often, if ever. I think he's doing a great job and I have no problem buying him as a gay man on the show despite his orientation in real life.

Freddie is one actor who is extremely comfortable and secure about himself as an actor. And that is what makes him so endearingly attractive. Even before he came onto Days, he had no qualms or insecurity or the fear of being stereotyped and that is what makes him so special. I agree he is indeed a super classy guy and knows how to carry of an interview without bring stringent.

I don't think you can hide your relationship at all. One thing is answer a question, and other trying to make clear in every single question how straight you are (and we have several examples of that). There's no reason to hide your girlfriend, at least if she doesn't have a problem being in the public eye. If you refuse to answer and you play a gay role, you must accept that it's going to be gay rumours surrounding you for a lot time. Some actors are comfortable with that, other are not. And i understand why an actor no matter how gay friendly he is, could be upset about gay rumours if he is in a relationship (maybe he doesn't mind being labeled as gay, but sure he will mind being called a liar).
In my opinion, interviews are quite difficult when you play a gay role. Of course if you are an openly gay actor you don't have any problem, for a gay actor not ready to come out the interviews are really hard. And for a straight actor, there are some different posibilities, you could look like totally cool, or you can look like a jerk (in different grades)

However. With that said, just to be on equal footing here (because isn't that the point?), do you think Neil Patrick Harris should keep David Burtka in a closet somewhere so people buy his performance as Barney, who is straight, on How I Met Your Mother? NPH is not that good of an example because I knew of his personal situation before HIMYM even existed. When I watching someone playing a gay role, I like to imagine that actor really knows what it's really like to be gay. Sadly, some of these young straight actors do not and those are the ones that end up making cringe inducing comments to the press. I agree that Freddie is pretty much out outside the normal in the sense that he seems to really get what life is like for someone LGBT and he volunteers in his spare time to help make the world a safer place for all people regardless of sexuality. To tell you that truth -and this is not really Freddie related, whenever I hear/read so and so actor playing a gay role is dating someone of the opposite sex IRL, I kind of take the news with a grain of salt. Just because they have a female on their arm doesn't mean that they aren't fooling around with dudes on the side. Also, just because someone knows they are straight doesn't mean they have never done any same-sex experimentation in the past. I usually hear that in most onscreen gay/lesbian pairings, one of the two is either gay in real life, has close gay friends or may even experimented at some point in the lives. A few celebs are even open about their dallies on the other side of fence.

Preach it! While there are certainly straight-identifying performers like Freddie who seem to understand both the on screen and off screen expectations that come with playing a gay role, there are others who do not and those are the ones who do not invest in their scenes, especially the intimate ones, or who do not know what to say or how to react in public away from their role. Many months ago, I said I wished this show would bring on an openly gay actor to portray a significant role and I was crucified for that statement. I'm not saying the gay actor is ultimately a better actor; but that they bring knowledge, experience and comfort to the role that a straight actor would find it difficult (maybe even impossible) to match. Freddie is aces all the way in every regard which is part of the reason I am always on Team Sonny. I do not know or care about how or why he gets it (and by "gets it" I mean what it's like to portray a gay character as a person and not as a caricature without any insight). I just know that he does get it and I cannot praise him enough for it. I will support him in whatever roles or endeavors he takes in the future because he truly gives a damn. He is an exceptionally classy guy.

This conversation has wandered a bit. Let's keep the discussion here centered on Freddie, and not on the merits of gay vs straight actors playing gay roles.
Thanks.

I love to read interviews by Freddie. He truly comes across as genuinely loving his story and loving to play Sonny. I love how he plays Sonny as a character and not just a gay character and I think that is what's so natural about Sonny. It is refreshing that Freddie doesn't push the fact that he's straight. He has a girlfriend but he doesn't overkill it as though he's trying to prove something. I am now seeing what other people have said on here. Freddie is a leader when it comes to a straight actor playing a gay character and doing press. He doesn't seem to come across as being fearful of being typecast or fearful of playing a gay character and it is reflected in how he portrays Sonny in the romance department. I have so much respect for Freddie:).
