What Van thinks of Luke

I think the question was which one of the characters (Luke or Noah) would you be friends with. Both answered Noah.


Okay a friend let me listen to part of the audio she has of the Q&A and here's what Van says about Luke. Couldn't understand all of it, Van and Jake mumble a lot.

Van: I think it would be hard for me to be friends with Luke. I really do. I think he is as overprotective as...(something mumble mumble, speak clearly, Van).... I think that he really likes to take the easy way out a lot. And that's really not something I find attractive at all in a friend. He doesn't follow through with anything. I think I would be better friends with Noah probably.

Jake: What are...I mean...I think Noah's interests...

Van: Luke doesn't have any interests! He liked writing for a couple minutes, then he liked helping gay kids for a couple minutes, then he liked helping sick kids for a couple minutes, then he liked running a board for a couple minutes, then he wanted to be on a hospital wing. He usually just falls into line with whatever the other person is into (not sure if that's the word he used), who he surrounds himself with. He's so just undriven. When he doesn't want to do something he calls his mother or father. And he still lives with his parents, and he's like probably 22 or 23 now. He didn't go to college cause he didn't want to anymore. Cause it was hard. I think he's got some great qualities too, like he's charming and funny. And yeah, I don't know.

Van has always said that he wanted Luke to grow-up, and find some direction in his life, so this is not surprising. Van has always spoken honestly about Luke.

I think it's quite obvious it's easier being friend with Noah than with Luke, dating him it's another and very different story.

And Van is playing the character for four years, i'm pretty sure he would like that the writers were more coherent in the development (or lack of it) of Luke. The truth is that in the hands of a less capable actor, Luke would be a character easy to hate

Ding, ding, ding! Obviously, Van is a Luke basher/hater. Van should have written for his character. He totally gets my thoughts on Luke, especially the falling in line with whatever floats the boat of the person he’s with. I don’t know why the show never tried to explore that and show him acknowledge and grow out of it.

But yeah, I don’t think Noah, who might be good friend material, is so much committed boyfriend material either until he works on the (abandonment, commitment, fear, resentment) issues he still seems unwilling to fully face himself thus far. Here, the show never cared to try to explore it.

Hmmm.... I think Luke would be a good friend or boyfriend. He cares deeply for the people in his life, but there is nothing he won't do for someone he cares about/loves. Sure, sometimes he goes overboard, but he always has the best intentions and he's got a huge, huge heart. And I think since dating Reid his lesser tendancies have been reined in a bit. But he does need to find interests outside of his current boyfriend though. That is true.

I actually don't know what kind of friend Noah would be since we only see him interact with Luke and we can't judge that way. But I know he makes a lousy boyfriend.
