I have a question, they ask him if he was gay just because the role or because they know he was bi for the previous interview. I mean, it's usual in netherlands ask an actor if he is gay just because he plays a gay role I watch a clip when a journalist ask Thore and Jo if they are a gay couple in real life, and i think it was because the journalist was an idiot, but it seems it's quite usual this kind of question. Here in spain, i never heard a journalist ask directly an actor if he is gay just to play a gay role

I'm pretty sure they already knew he was bi. In the background they showed newspaper articles with quotes from Ferry saying he's bi.
I don't really have a problem with this question. I think people just want to know more about Ferry, since he's a "new celebrity". The male interviewer is gay himself, so I don't think the question came from the interviewers' idiocy. They're very pro-gay.
I think there might be less controversy around GLBT actors/celebrities over here. A lot of celebrities are out. Maybe that's why direct questions like this one are asked more often. Just a guess.

Yes, i know in netherlands are a lot of gay celebrities, so maybe the dynamics are different. But i don't think it's fair asking an actor about his sexual orientation only because he plays a gay role. In fact, i think it's a good idea for a new actor keep his privacy at a very high level, not because there's nothing to hide, just because it's easy to people to center in the character and not in the actor

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree somewhat (but that's not really a bad thing). Interviewers can ask the questions. In the end it's up to the celebrity to decide what they want to tell about themselves. Ferry obviously doesn't have a problem with being open about himself. I also don't think it's now less easy for the viewers to focus on the character. But that's just my opinion.
I think it's great that Ferry is able to be honest about himself. But in the end it's about his role and the storyline on GTST for me. Like I said, knowing that he's bi is not going to change how I will look at him on the show and I think most people will be like that.

Yes, it's cool that he is so comfortable being so young. About the question, i think it depends of the country, every country is different, and it's obvious that this is a non issue for this guy, but not everybody is ready to come out publicly at 18, and even is a dangerous question if the actor is straight (all Nicholas Gobb interviews starts with an I'm straight that i find a bit anward, and Guy Burnett is even worse). By the way, i'm watching your youtbe channel, i watch all nuke clips and i find that you have luke's storyline from the begining (at least the begining of Van portraying luke). And it's good to follow the story from the begining

I think you're right that it depends on the country. The interviewing style in the Netherlands is usually very direct. And since I'm sure they already knew Ferry was open about himself, I don't have a problem with the question.
I think it's just so interesting to see a non-Dutch point of view on this. It's also great people can see things in a different way but still discuss that with respect. There are some other sites where that doesn't happen... *sigh*
And yes, I have every Luke scene uploaded from the moment Van took over the role in December 2005 (those episodes aired in 2007 on Dutch TV).

Well, here in spain the situation is quite different, we have tolerant laws and in fact there's a very good aceptation of gays, but there are very few out celebrities. But i think it'll change in the next years because younger gays are a lot open about it

Like I said, knowing that he's bi is not going to change how I will look at him on the show and I think most people will be like that. I feel the same way. To me it really doesn't matter. Just as it doesn't matter to me when I watch other shows or soaps. But maybe it's indeed because we are so used to out celebrities over here that nobody really cares whether they are straight, gay or bi. Which is great btw. (Although sometimes it makes me forget that it's not that common in other countries)

Well, the US is pretty divided over the question, so I don't know if there's an "American" perspective on the issue, but my personal view is that it's perfectly okay to ask, but that the interviewer should just accept whatever answer or non-answer they're given and move on. Pushing or speculating or releasing proof is definitely bad.
It's like asking someone if they're married or have children; that's not any of your business either, but it's generally accepted as okay in a "getting to know you" conversation, which an interview is. And there are certainly celebrities out there (including straight ones) who DON'T want to talk about things like that, and simply decline to discuss it, which is perfectly okay.
I also think that while it's a perfectly valid PR strategy for actors to hide themselves behind the character, it can also be a good idea to get people to like YOU (or at least your public persona) in addition to the character. If they like you they'll follow you to other projects. If they like your character, they'll always want you to be back at that. There are certainly soap actors out there whose every new role seems to be met with "they need to go back to Show 'X'".

Yes, I am. ;D I also think there is a chance this will be connected to Lucas. There are still rumors that someone already on the show is going to be Lucas' boyfriend. It would make sense if Dex realizes he's bi (with Elizabeth's character being a sexologist). Wouldn't it be great if Elizabeth had a gay grandson on this show too?

Ferry started filming today. On the official GTST Twitter you could ask him question. I think I was too late, but I sent my question anyway. Not every question was that interesting, but it was nice to know that his first scenes were with Marly van der Velde (Nina) and Emiel Sandtke (Dex). That gives me some hope that Dexas (LOL!) will happen. He also said that the reason that Lucas is returning to Meerdijk is that Lucas has been working hard (I think he graduated high school) and now wants to return to his roots to relax a little. According to Ferry Lucas is an optimistic "always look on the bright side of life" kinda guy.

Dex is a cutie! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dexas, lol. Thanks for the clips plus subtitles, Mark. By the way, do you think you could give a brief rundown of the characters Lucas is expected to interact with upon returning to town (i.e. any family or friends currently on canvas)?

Sure! Janine Elschot (mother)Played by Caroline de BruinJanine has been on the show since 1992. She's one of the stars of the show (usually with the highest episode count). Janine's true love is Ludo. They've been on and off since 1995. The actors are married in real life. Janine had an affair with Ludo's son Stefano. That's when she got pregnant with Lucas. Janine has her own magazine: "J Magazine". At the moment she's in a relationship with Jack van Houten who is younger than she is. Her best friend is Barbara. Nina Sanders (half-sister)Played by Marly van der VeldeNina is the daughter of Janine and Ludo, so she's Lucas' half-sister. There was a gas explosion during her 21st birthday party. She's now partially paralyzed. She would love to see her parents get back together. Right now she gets a lot of support from her friend Dex. Ludo Sanders (grandfather)Played by Erik de VogelLudo has his own company Sanders Inc. Not a lot of people in town like Ludo. He has done some shady things in the past. He obviously didn't like it when his son Stefano slept with his wife, but that's all in the past now. Lucas sees Ludo as his grandfather, because Stefano sees Ludo as his father. But it was revealed that Ludo's father had raped Ludo's first wife. She got pregnant. That's why technically Stefano and Ludo are brothers, which means that technically Ludo is Lucas' uncle. Stefano Sanders (father)Played by Bas MuijsI included him, because they're obviously going to mention him, but I don't think there are plans at this moment to bring the character back. Stefano moved to New York with Lucas. Lucas is coming back, while Stefano is staying. Maxime Sanders (aunt)Played by Marjolein KeuningMaxime is Ludo's longlost sister. She's a very manipulative woman who would do anything to get what she wants. She has an almost obsessive love for her niece Nina. Nick Sanders (uncle)Played by Christophe HaddadNick is Ludo's other son. They got to know each other only a couple of years ago. Stefano is clearly the favorite son. Ludo basically disowned Nick. Nick and Stefano didn't get along in the past, but when Stefano visted earlier this year they were pretty civil. Nick loves his sister Nina a lot. Dex Huygens (future boyfriend??)Played by Emiel SandtkeDex is the son of Martijn and Irene. He has an older sister Ronja. His grandmother (played by Elizabeth Hubbard, Lucinda in ATWT) is going to debut in the same week as Lucas). Dex is a good guy, but he does have his bad boy qualities. Since being on the show he hasn't been in a serious relationship. His love life is sort of a mystery to the viewers. He's very supportive of Nina right now, but I see them more as friends. There has been nothing romantic between them. He's a complex character, which is only a good thing IMO. Lucas doesn't really have friends on the show, because he was probably too young when he left. But there is a group of younger characters. There's a lot of character interaction on this show, so when the storyline starts feel free to ask for more info on the characters Lucas might be interacting with.

Thanks for the rundown, Mark; it was extremely informative. So Lucas and Nina are not only half-siblings, but half-cousins too? Although people might think she is his aunt? Heh. Very Snyder-like.

Yeah... it's all very confusing. ;D But they see each other as siblings, everyone else sees them as siblings so I think it's best if we the viewers will see them as siblings too.

Liz Hubbard is FABULOUS. Can't wait to see her as "Sair". I wonder how different she will be from Lucinda. (I hope they have gay grandsons in common.)
By the way, I notice Sair's last name is Poindexter. Is it just a coincidence her grandson's name is Dex?
[For that matter, is it a coincidence that Luke's (ATWT) full name of Luciano is a simple rearrangement of "Lucinda" with the 'd' has being replaced by an 'o'? I've always wondered! I know his middle name was for Damian's cousin Eduardo, who was married to Lisa.]
