My favorite character on Hollyoaks and my favorite gay character. I love him! I just am cringing at the thought of the pain he's about to experience.

i love jp as an character on HO... he is smart, funny, adorable and he deserves to find his real love... first the jp/craig desaster (hoping for a sunset ending) second the jp/kieron fail (they so great together)
what comes next??? i hope he get a storyline where he can be together with a man/lover (whatever) and live his life...and be happy!

i'm a little bit a hardcoremcdeaner.. but this lovestory was so wonderful and special.. *sigh.. but anyway: james is such a great actor and the whole jp-character is one of the best characters i ever saw in a soap.. (and just by the way: he is sooooooo gorgeous... )

Every time I see him I'm amazed how smooth-skinned guys can be. That combined with the light complexion, the light brown hair and blue eyes makes him look sooo goooorgeous... um, anyway, ;D I have a few questions I'd like to ask. 1) Does James Sutton have an official contact address? 2) What is that lovely accent of his? Is it a "Birmingham accent" (according to where James was born)? ( On a side note, he's one of the extremely few native speakers who actually pronounce the word "actually" with a "chooə" sound, which is perpetuated by text books and dictionaries as the standard British pronunciation, in contrast to the "shə" version that is attributed to American English. The reality is quite different, I must say.) Hmm, I might come up with more, but that's it for now. I'm new to Hollyoaks and just watched the JP/Kieron clips.

One thing the past few episodes have told me is that John Paul has become extremely isolated as a character. I'm not sure if anyone besides Myra even cared what he was doing with Kieron. I know they have to phase John Paul out if James Sutton is leaving, but last year, John Paul was such a central character to some of the show's biggest stories. When Craig left and John Paul moved out on his own, I thought there was a chance he could progress even further. Instead, he seemed to just become a spare part. If they bring in any other gay characters, I hope they won't make the same error.

It's true that they moved JP to the background a bit after the McDean storyline but that storyline had been frontburner for almost a year, so I guess it's more than normal that other characters got more attention - there's more than 30 characters on the show... I think he will get more attention over the summer with the engagement and Craig returning As to other gay characters: they deserve the same attention as every other character, which will come in waves... *spoiler tagging.

It is now being suggested that one of the reasons JP gets so little airtime is because his storyline with Kieron has been dragged out much longer (well, the black holes were dragged out much longer) than intended to fit around Guy Burnet's schedule - as James Sutton said he extended his contract to make that possible in the After Elton interview. Even if so, I agree they could have had him involved in other storylines. It was even a bit weird seeing him with his fellow students yesterday - it had been so long since we'd seen him with anyone other than Kieron or Niall or a family member.

If they needed to fill time until Guy got back, then why couldn't they have spent more time showing John Paul and Kieron becoming friends, or falling in love? Those parts of the story were rushed through.
I thought they'd lost interest in John Paul after Guy left (and if James told them he was leaving, then that probably just furthered their decision), but I hadn't realized they were so sloppy with the pacing of this story for that reason. That's not Guy's fault, that's the show's fault. They could have done so much more with John Paul during this time.
One of the best gay characters ever on a soap, and one of the rare opportunities for a gay character to be more than just his sexuality, to be a prominent part of the community, and they spent almost a year completely marginalizing and devaluing him to the point where I'm not even sure how many people will be sad to see him go.
I just don't get it.
There have been a lot of story problems and pacing problems on Hollyoaks this year. Hopefully they're being worked out because the show can be so much better than this type of handling of a crucial character and his storyline.
I'm amazed James and Jake did as well as they did this year, especially Jake, since he had nothing to work on whereas John Paul at least had 2006 and 2007 as history. I hope the show knows how much the actors did under these circumstances.

The pacing hasn't just been a problem with the JPK storyline, because the same thing can be said for Niall's story. It has dragged on so long with no progress, and some viewers have even forgotten that Niall is Myra's son.

Hopefully they're being worked out because the show can be so much better than this type of handling of a crucial character and his storyline. I suspect the shows producers may not see it like that - they went home with an armful of awards at this years British soap awards -more than they've ever done before - up against british institutions like Corrie & Eastenders. They may consider that they've been doing things very well.

Those awards were based on material from 2007. Some of the show has certainly been excellent in 2008, like Max's departure, but I can't see them winning a lot of awards for their stories this year. Not that the other soaps are that much better, because they aren't, but those are bigger shows. It's easier for them to win an award. Hollyoaks has to really work hard.
This Niall story could have been brilliant. The pacing absolutely baffles me. If they were going to drag it out this way I wish they could have just redeemed Niall and kept him around as part of the McQueen family.

I agree carld2 about Niall. I think the show is trying to emmulate Eastenders in terms of style and tone. The result is a show that is relying too much on plot instead of character development. And to be honest, the show does seem to be getting a lot of attention this year, so maybe their plan is working.

To me Niall is no longer redeemable, because of Tina, and even though I don't blame him for Max's death a lot of others do. They should just hurry up with reveal before the character gets worse. hopefully John Paul is still there when the reveal happens.

I thought he was pretty irredeemable once he shot Michaela up with heroin and I don't even like her. That said, talk about Niall should probably go in the Hollyoaks Gen Disc thread and let's keep this one bout John Paul.

I'm so glad that James decided to come back and be apart of the Niall revenge against the McQueen's storyline in October. It wouldn't have made sense to not have JP there. I'm also glad that he opted out of the LNHO in November. The original script must have been pretty dismal, since he and Guy had issues with it. Good for him.

At least we already know he can take a bunch. As long as he doesn't hit back anymore, Brendan's in love.

Fell into the trap of discussing JP's return on the JPC thread.
Will not happen again, not by me.

i wouldn't fret TOO MUCH. This basically opens the door for John Paul/Craig to be on screen older and wiser... I'm sure TPTB are not dumb enough to try and dismiss 'McDean' again, and likely the only reason James is returning is to have that 'big McDean reunion' in their back pocket. One of them comes on first, to 'test the waters' and, depending on the reception, then they go full-steam ahead trying to procure the other. i mean times are tough, and try as Guy might he's not really doing the damn thing here in the states. LOL these guys are getting older and have bills to pay. I'm sure they are glad at least SOMEONE somewhere wants them.
