Casualty is a very long-running medical drama that airs on BBC1 in the UK. Recently, the sexuality of one of the characters, Toby, has become the focus of a storyline. Previous storylines had him dating a woman. As far as I know (I do not watch this series, nor do I plan on catching up on the previous 48 episode (!!) season), there have been no prior indications that Toby might be attracted to men. Toby is a regular character who has been on the show since Season 22 Episode 1. He is a recent med school graduate (think Grey's Anatomy, Season 2). Ben is a more recent addition this season, and has a less starring role. He is a counselor. This storyline began recently, so has only been in two episodes so far. I have begun clipping this storyline, and plan on continuing for however long it lasts (which may not be long, tbh, as internet rumors seem to indicate that Toby may leave the show soon. That has yet to be confirmed). The first clip is from Episode 23x12, which aired 11-22-08. I have mainly focused this clip on Toby and Ben together, leaving out most of the medical drama Toby dealt with in this episode. I did include several of his scenes with his close friend and housemate Ruth, since it is pertinent to the storyline. All of Ben's scenes in this episode are included. Some background on this clip: The episode began with Ruth, the morning after sleeping with her boss, Nick. It swiftly becomes apparent that he regrets the tryst, and does not want it to become public at work, or to be repeated. But Ruth is slow to catch on throughout the day, and poor Toby gets the brunt of her emotional confusion. He is also dealing with a schizophrenic teenager who is believed to have killed his mother's adulterous lover. Toby is happy to discover that the boy is innocent and informs the parents. YouTube LinkI have also clipped ALL of Toby scenes and included them in a downloadable clip. This includes the medical storyline that Toby is dealing with in this episode, as well as more interaction with Ruth. This story would probably be even easier to follow if I included all of Ruth's scenes with Nick, but I don't really care about them, so I didn't. Suffice it to say, Ruth needs a lesson in reading signals. All of Ben's scenes are included as well, just as they were in the YouTube clip. ~73mb (~13 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFireI hope to have the next episode up in a day or two. Enjoy!

You're welcome! I enjoyed how this couple began, but I confess being a bit nervous as to where they are heading. I hope it all works out for them! I have clipped the next part and uploaded it. These clips are from Episode 23x13, which aired 11-29-08. I left out a good chunk of the medical drama Toby dealt with in this episode. The case he was handling, however, involved an elderly homosexual couple, so I left a bit of it in, as it gives some insight as to why Toby suddenly stops simply smiling dreamily over his texts from Ben and instead begins thinking about how his relationship with Ben makes him gay. I also included his exchanges with friend Ruth. She has pretty much been kicked to the curb by Nick, and looks like she will be transferring her distrust in relationships over to Toby. Sigh. All of Ben's scenes are included in the clip. YouTube LinkI have also uploaded the clip to MediaFire. For this clip, I included ALL of Toby's scenes, including those just related to medicine. I also included the opening scene about the couple he is treating, since they are a homosexual couple, and I found the storyline quite sweet. ~52mb (~8:47 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFireThe next episode aired last night, so I should have it clipped in a day or so (perhaps tonight).

Here's Part 3! These clips are from Episode 23x14, which aired 12-06-08. I clipped out all Toby scenes related to this week's medical storyline, as it was completely unrelated to his storyline with Ben, and he played more of a background role anyway. One important thing that you miss from this storyline, however, is that Toby makes a minor mistake (not even really a mistake), but he gets quite upset about it. There has been a bit of a continuing theme that Toby questions whether or not he truly belongs in medicine, as his parents pushed him into this field. So while that was only minorly highlighted this episode, it also plays a part in why his tensions are running so high. I included all of Ben's scenes, obviously, and all scenes of Ruth talking about Toby's relationship with Ben. One scene that you are not seeing is that after first talking to Ben, Ruth goes to Nick to try to discuss what happened between them. But Nick blows her off, yet again, and shows no reaction later in the episode when she says she is considering switching programs. This plays a part in what sets her off to report Ben. But still - what a meddling pain in the arse! The voice-over during the last scene is a letter a now-deceased patient wrote to his love interest when he realized he may die. While it is not strictly targeted at Toby, the themes obviously apply to him, in the sense that living his life in fear is hurting him. YouTube LinkAnd here is the full clip at MediaFire. As always, I included all of Toby's medical drama, though really a lot of it is just him standing around. But it does include his minor freak out over the "mistake" he feels he made, which, as I mentioned, is something of an important part of his storyline. I also included two Ruth scenes that I cut from the YouTube clip. While these deal with her relationship with Nick, and not strictly with Toby and Ben, they help explain what exactly led her to that point by the end of the episode. ~82mb (~14 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFireIt'll be a week until the next new episode.

I cannot believe Ruth. After all of her carrying on about Toby leaving her alone and staying out of her love life.
She absolutely no reason to believe that Toby was taken advantage of. He's a grown man and from what I've seen, completely capable of making a decision to sleep with whomever he wants.
She has no basis for her suspicions except maybe the realization that Toby WASN'T trying to get in her pants and that topped by the fact that Nick doesn't want her is quite a blow.
But whatever. She's outted them both without their consent to the director AND put Toby in an insane and horrible position all because of her self-absorbed completely immature feelings about her relationship with Nick. One Night Stand Ruth, Look it Up! Nick could not have been more clear.
She's going to ruin people's careers because her feelings are hurt? She didn't even give Toby a chance to tell her what happened. You'd think Nick (knowing what he knows about the state she's in) would want to verify the story before dismissing Ben. WTF?!
Toby is confused because he's just slept with a man and has no idea how he feels about it (though he seemed to be happy about it before she opened her mouth.)
Ben did the completely appropriate thing in immediately assigning Toby to a new Counselor so there would be no conflict of interest (although I'd love to know exactly how many sessions they had beyond the conversation in the bar)
Just because you have a conversation with a counselor, doesn't make you their patient, particularly if you work in the same hospital.
I can't believe Ruth would do all of this without even consulting Toby. EGADS!!!
If I have to watch one more lovely young gay man be tortured by his coming out or just his desires for another man, I might have to tie myself to some train tracks!!
It's hard enough just wrapping your head around being gay sometimes without other folks getting all up in your ice cream when they don't know the scoop!

Thanks for posting these. Toby's so cute; I hope things work out okay for him. I also can't believe what Ruth did; and I'm surprised Nick didn't at least try to talk to Toby about it first, with or without Ruth around.

So now Toby has panicked about everyone thinking he's gay and has decided to allow everyone to think that Ben "pressured" him into sleeping with him. I wonder if we're going down a " boy calls rape rather than admits his sexuality" storyline

I don't watch this show (it's queued, though) but the actor who plays Ben was so familiar to me. Was driving me crazy. Finally found the actor's name and realized he is in Wire In The Blood (great show) and that's where I know him from. I might just watch too much UK TV. Seems that folks are enjoying this storyline. Cool.

You're welcome everyone! darcolover - I'm afraid I share your dislike of Ruth. I tried to cut her some slack, since I am just jumping into this show in the middle of the season, and I am obviously biased towards Toby. Sometimes it's hard to understand what characters are really like when you don't see them outside the context of the one part you are watching. But I've been reading up on the character bios, and frankly, she just sounds dreadful all around. I've actually just begun downloading the latter half of the previous season because I've become intrigued by the Jessica/Adam storyline, so maybe I'll see another side of her. But somehow I doubt. Ruth continued to disappoint in the latest episode, which I am working on now and should have posted in just a little while.

This clip is from Episode 23x15, which aired 12-13-08. I tried to include as much of Toby's medical drama as I could fit in YouTube's 10 minute limit, since his narcoleptic patient this week was portrayed by James Sutton (JOHN PAUL!!). Unfortunately, I still had to cut a good chunk of James's scenes out, as well as miscellaneous Toby scenes that were entirely unrelated to Ben. All Ben scenes are included. Some background as to what is going on: Ruth is interviewing for the job in a different department, as she announced she would on the last episode. She expected her boss/one-night-stand Nick to make it easy for her, but instead he was quite tough on her in the interview. This is why she is yelling at him in the hallway when Toby walks up. It is also why she appears to be talking to herself at the beginning of the clip - she is practicing for her interview. Yet again, Ruth allows her frustrations with her own personal life to spill over onto Toby. Grrrr.... News of Ben's suspension is spreading all over the hospital, and everyone is gossiping. Toby is understandably scared that his name will suddenly be dragged into this. He's not sure of his sexuality, yet he is about to be outed to the entire staff! The party at the end is the hospital Christmas party. Perhaps putting him on the spot surrounded by everyone he works with wasn't the best idea... YouTube LinkI know what Toby did was all kinds of horrible, but I am willing to cut him some slack. According to what I've read, he previously dated a girl and there were no hints that he was gay or bisexual. At the very least, he is deeply closeted and conflicted about his sexuality. Now he has had sex with a man, and within a span of two days, it is practically all over the hospital and people are insisting he either say that he is gay or that Ben took advantage of him. No one is really giving him any wiggle room to just say neither. I have faith that Toby will quickly feel terrible about the Ben situation and fix it. This is a guy who felt bad for Ruth as she was crying, despite what she'd just done to him! He's just not cruel enough to maintain this lie. Unfortunately, he is rather weak-willed in allowing himself to go along with it to begin with. And here is the downloadable clip. As always, this includes ALL Toby scenes, as well as all Ben scenes. It therefore includes all of Toby's interactions with James Sutton's character. But it does not include James Sutton's full storyline. There was quite a bit of that which took place outside the hospital and was entirely unrelated to Toby. Thus it wasn't relevant to this clip. ~67mb (~12 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFire

Yeah, it is a rather sad and, at times, frustrating storyline. As I tried to explain in the comments of one of the YouTube videos - this show is quite a bit like the US medical drama ER. Anyone who watches that show understands how they never really make any character totally perfect. Along the way, they all do some pretty crappy things. Which can definitely be frustrating for the fans, lol! Here is this week's clip, from Episode 23x16. It aired today, 12-20-08. Since Toby didn't really have any medical drama this week - just personal drama - I managed to include all of his scenes in the YouTube clip. As well as all of Ben's. The only real snippet of background you may need to understand what is going on - At the beginning of the episode, Ruth has learned that she didn't get the new job she wanted, and she confronted her boss/one-night-stand Nick, accusing him of blackballing her. He told her she simply wasn't ready yet for the job. (Of course, Ruth, being Ruth, can't really wrap her head around this blatant truth, and still thinks it's just all personal. Ugh. I really just can't stand Ruth.) This is why she is angrily banging dishes at the beginning of the clip, and why Toby's dig at her medical skills packs an extra punch. YouTube LinkAnd here is the downloadable clip. No further scenes than what is in the YouTube clip, but better quality, of course. ~35.4mb (~6:31 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFire

Thanks for posting the clips it's been interesting to see where this story was going but I'm just so over him.
God. They are both so awful. He and Ruth are exactly the same and they deserve each other.
It is just impossible for me to have any kind feelings at all for Toby at this point.
He just seems petty and selfish and cowardly and self-hating.
Even if he's not gay, why "slander"? why "defamation of character"?
What kind of doctor could he possibly be if he can't have any empathy for Ben or even himself.
He's not even willing to explain to Ruth that he wasn't exploited by Ben so that at least she'd stop going off about it.
What century is he living in. The nurse totally gave him an out to talk about his feelings and to come clean about everything and he still just caved. WHATEVER FOR HIM.
So he'd rather just have the whole hospital think Ben was sacked for being a perv. Clearly the story will get out.
UGH!!!

Here's the latest clip. Casualty actually aired two nights in a row last week, but I didn't realize that and was distracted by all the things going on with Christmas; thus, I missed it. So the episode this clip is from actually aired last week. I am working on tonight's episode now, and should have that clip up a little later. **** This clip is from Episode 23x17, which aired 12-21-08. ALL of Toby's scenes are included in this clip. Ben did not appear in this episode. You don't really need any background to understand what is going on, as Toby's scenes really just focused on his continuing friction with Ruth. But just for point of information, this episode is a continuation of the previous episode, and picks up right where the other episode left off. Thus, this is all taking place the same night as the last clip. YouTube LinkHere's the downloadable file. Again, all Toby scenes were included in the YouTube clip, so there is no extra content in this clip. ~17mb (~2:42 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFire

Here is this week's clip, from Episode 23x18. It aired yesterday, 12-27-08. The Toby scenes from this episode ran well over 10 minutes, even if I clipped out all the medical drama. So instead I just kept it all, and split the clip into two parts for YouTube. Thus, these two clips contain ALL of Toby's scenes and ALL of Ben's scenes from the episode. Some background on the episode: Toby is sent to the scene where a body - barely alive - has been found beaten in a dumpster. He is pretty disturbed that someone could do something like this. That is the Old Father Time patient he is working with throughout the episode, and the one he "confides" in. A journalist shows up wanting to talk to the person who rescued the old man, i.e. Toby. He sees Toby bungling a little, and decides this may be a better story. The other patient, in the leather jacket, is likely the one who committed the crime, unbeknownst to everyone. So he is fishing for information so he can cover his tracks. He is the one who calls in the "tip" that a gang of kids beat the man up. The party at the end is a staff party with a nautical theme, thus the costumes. Ruth, meanwhile, has YET AGAIN unfairly judged and condemned a patient, resulting in a bit of drama, and the patient calling her unfit to be a doctor. So she's, as always, a bit of a raw nerve. [ As an offside vent here - Ruth bothered me SO MUCH in this episode. When she snottily informed Toby that she had to rat him out because he almost killed a patient, it was shockingly hypocritical. She has made FAR worse mistakes - which she never fessed up to - and Toby has been nothing but a good friend to her during all that. And her snap judgements about patients' personal lives has actually KILLED a patient before, yet she keeps doing it in nearly every episode. She is really become less and less tolerable by the day. I get the impression that this character is pretty popular amongst Casualty fans, but I've started watching earlier episodes, and I am still baffled as to why. Ugh. Just had to vent.
Also, there is another storyline going on in this episode with one of the nurses, Jessica, and her husband Sean. She had previously had an affair with another doctor, Adam, whom you may have noticed in some of the clips. Which is nothing compared to the multiple affairs Sean has had. Anyway, their storyline took a really dramatic and horrifying turn this week, kind of making all of Toby's stupid actions pale in comparison. Seriously. Sean really took the pure evil prize in this episode.] YouTube Part 1LinkYouTube Part 2 LinkHere's the downloadable clip. Again, no additional content, as everything was included in the YouTube clips, but all the scenes are included in one clip, as opposed to split like YouTube. ~89.7mb (~15 minutes) wmv File @ MediaFire

I agree with you about Ruth and it's so sad because it's such a waste. I'm glad Toby did the right thing by Ben but I really wanted him to just blast the whole rumor thing out of the water at the party. I know he was drunk and many of the folks their didn't even know about the sexual harassment accusation but if you're going to make drunken pronouncement, how bout some news folks an use, if you know what I mean. I wanted Toby to grab the mic and say something like " Blah, blah, no one here loves me or listens to me and I'm a complete idiot who has been scared of my own shadow and I told a horrific lie about Ben which he did not deserve. I regret what I did so terribly because I really enjoyed being with him and wish I'd had the courage to give our relationship a chance. Instead, I gave in to my fears and insecurities and allowed this horrible allegation about Ben to affect his future career and his standing in this hospital. I offer my sincere apologies to Ben and Nick and hope Ben will find it in his heart, eventually, to forgive me." Okay, that's my fantasy. I think Ben "could" actually forgive TOby because coming out can be so incredibly difficult and folks make horrible selfish decisions out of fear and Ben knows Toby is a good man at heart who just has some growing to do. I'm assuming Toby will either perish or be left in a coma or flee from the hospital in shame and embarrassment due to the great big sensationalist story the sneaky journalist is about to publish. My Fantasy Ending For Toby and Ben (Because I Actually Adore Toby Even If I Do Want To SHAKE HIM)The story gets squashed. Toby and Ben both leave Holby for good. Toby becomes a hospice or long-term care nurse (either of which I think he'd do brilliantly) and Ben gets a new job and they have their first official date as <spoiler> Matthew Needham leaves the show. I can still hope.<spoiler>

Here is this week's clip, from Episode 23x19. It aired yesterday, 11-03-09. This should be the end to this storyline, and a great ending at that! This episode focused primarily on Toby, so I had to cut a HUGE chunk of his scenes out. And I STILL had to split the clip into 2 parts! I feel like what I left gives you a pretty good sense of Toby's personal drama, but so much of the episode impacted on his actions and reactions that I would really encourage you to check out the downloadable clip at the bottom. ALL Ben scenes are included in the YouTube clips. Some background on the episode: This episode picks up directly where the other episode left off. Toby is rescued from the water. His patient from the previous episode - who is responsible, unbeknownst to everyone, for the near-fatal beating of another patient - was discharged and tried to leave town. But his brakes failed and his car hit a train. The hospital is overwhelmed with the train's victims, which is why Toby is asked to stay for the day. The patient confesses to Toby that he is accidentally caused the accident so Toby will help hide him from the cops. Toby is torn about what to do. The guy continues trying to take off from the hospital, but disasters keep landing him back there. He is confident that Toby is too weak-willed to rat him out to the cops, but he is wrong, and Toby does. Toby also manages to figure out that this guy is responsible for the earlier patient's beating. He finds the guy in the patient's room, where he had been considering killing him so he could never rat him out. That's the fight you see at the end. Ruth, meanwhile, has been dealing with a young female patient who will not let anyone near her to treat her. There are all kinds of funny disasters as Ruth tries to figure out how to deal with her. Until finally she thinks of Toby. The majority of the episode is spent with Toby, again, feeling ineffectual at his job, as he is overwhelmed with the number of patients. But by the end we see that he is a good doctor, just perhaps not meant for this particular area of medicine. Part 1 YouTube LinkPart 2 YouTube LinkAnd here's the downloadable clip, with ALL of Toby's scenes. It was too big for MediaFire's 100mb limit, so I upped it to MegaUpload. If anyone is uncertain about how to use MegaUpload (I swear, it's very easy), just ask. ~171mb (~32 minutes) wmv File @ MegaUpload

Everything about this last episode was perfect. The Dad going to get Ben just sealed the deal for me. Made all the angst worth it. Sad that the actor chose to leave the show. He's an incredible performer and Ben's smile at Toby when he called him a big girl's blouse was Sexy As Hell. Thanks for bringing this story to me and all Cheers
