I'm sad about the ending, but I will just live with the spoiler from the book and not expect a S2. Easier not to be disappointed that way if the censors got to the show.

Finally made it to the top of my list and finished watching this weekend. Yes, a really enjoyable show.
I have one question: Was Su Yu's best friend's father gay? Or was I reading too much into what he was saying?
I'll just allow myself to be pleasantly surprised if a second season comes, the ending was hard.

I have one question: Was Su Yu's best friend's father gay? Or was I reading too much into what he was saying? When the original series of 'Addicted' was pulled by the Chinese authorities I resorted to try and read the fan-translated version of the novel that was on Wattpad. I have to admit I found it tough going and gradually lost interest, so I'm probably not the best person to answer this. I skim read quite a few parts of the story that I was already familiar with and only paid more attention to the (sometimes VERY naughty) interaction between Gu Hai and Luo Yin (now Wu Bi and Su Yu). However, for what it's worth, my personal opinion is that Han Bo's dad is not gay.* In the novel, Luo Yin's two friends, You Qi (now Mao Chong) and Yang Meng (now Han Bo Kuang) actually became the story's side couple. Yang Meng wasn't in the same class as the others, so the fact he was constantly hanging around with You Qi (who was seen as the school heartthrob), made it obvious that he had a crush on him. His dad didn't like seeing his son with You Qi who he believed to be too ostentatious. Also, because Yang Meng wasn't very athletic and poor at sports, his dad thought of him as a weakling and constantly berated him; arguing that he was not manly enough and that he should aspire to be more like Gu Hai ( Wu Bi) who he saw as being everything his son was not. To be honest, I think 'Stay With Me' pretty much told the same story with the character of Han Bo and his father, but this time chose to soften the dad's sternness down to an almost comedic level of the book's character. To me it looked like they had decided to go with the joke of the dad complaining about his son's perceived lack of masculinity, when in truth he was no different himself; so in essence Han Bo really was the epitome of being his father's son. ----- * I am, of course, basing my opinion on the way the father was written in the novel, which never once made me think he might be gay. 'Stay With Me' has admittedly made a number of changes to various character from the book, so there is a possibility that they might have deliberately hinted that Han Bo's dad might be further up the Kinsey scale than before? I wouldn't put it past the writers possibly doing that as a little tease that the censors couldn't really complain about. Just a thought.

I was most likely reading too much into it. I am glad they softened Han Bo's father a bit, the way you describe him from the novel I would have found really annoying.
Thanks for your toughts.

It suddenly occurred to me that we haven't added any of the OST tracks to the thread. Although the songs (mainly sung by Xu Bin) have been release on some music platforms, there has been no release on YouTube. That hasn't stopped many fan-made versions being released. I elected to go with lyric videos since the songs become more meaningful when you think of the scenes where they were used in the show.
"The Meaning of Family" sung by Xu Bin, Sun Yi Chen and Zhang Jiong Min:
"Waiting" sung by Xu Bin:
"The Shining Stars" sung by Zhang Jiong Min and Xu Bin:
"Mila" sung by Xu Bin:

So, if we get the second series and it follows the course of the book... we'll get to see Su Yu join the military. I wouldn't necessarily be averse to that happening, if it gave us something like this: Of course, with Wu Bi's dad no longer being a senior army officer, like he is in the novel, there's no inherent reason for him to coerce Su Yu into joining up. He's also been softened down a lot from the callous, unloving father he is in the original story, so it's unlikely they would have him be so conniving and ruthless just to keep Su Yu and Wu Bi apart. Having said that, it's supposed to be a pivotal part of the book, so it'll be interesting to see if they do still find a way to keep it in the story.

I really love these songs. Are there any more available from their music project? Although I believe five songs were recorded with the intention of putting them out as an EP, these are the only two that I know have so far been released - and even then I don't think they are officially available outside of China. The versions available on YouTube and elsewhere have (to my knowledge) all been ported over by fans with access to the Chinese platforms who were wanting to share them with the rest of the world. Having said that, I'm not really up to date with what is going on, so maybe the songs are now more widely available than I know. Incidentally, I did screen grab some snippets of info and the pic below from a Chinese article when the songs were first released. The article made no mention of 'Stay With Me' or the guys acting careers. Note, these are just isolated sentences I culled from the translated page: "Today marks the release of a highly-anticipated EP by the young male singing group “Midsummer Night.” Comprised of Zhang Jiongmin and Xu Bin, the talented duo offers a delightful blend of charm and musical prowess.""The self-titled EP officially launches their promising journey in the music industry.""Despite their contrasting personalities, Zhang Jiongmin and Xu Bin share a remarkable bond together that radiates warmth.""The duo’s first two EP tracks have garnered significant praise from both online communities and industry professionals.""Music enthusiasts eagerly await the release of the complete album as the talented duo continues their musical journey, promising to captivate listeners with their extraordinary talent."

Sorry for the tardy reply, Wu Bi stan. In answer to your question, no, I don't think they ever made a proper recording of the song. It's actually titled 'Goodbye Lonely Heart' even though the first line of the song is "Goodbye my old friend..." As far as I know Xu Bin and Jiong Min only did an acoustic guide lyric for the classroom scene which was then segued into the actual version by Andy Powell. Here's the Andy Powell original which does use the visuals of Wu Bi and Su Yu singing to their classmates as part of the video. To be honest, even though the 'breakup' lyrics of the song diverge completely from the deepening love story that is actually unfolding, I do like this video a lot.

Yes, I'm a big fan of this show and consider it to be one of the best series I've watched this year. In truth I'm a bit of a hoarder so I've got a folder full of stuff from the series that I've picked up along the way - BTS snippets, outtakes, photo-shoot pics of Xu Bin and Zhang Jiong Min, etc. However, since the series has ended now, I'm not sure there is much interest still out there as I expect most folk will have moved on to other things. Maybe if there is something new and relevant I'll post it. But, just in case you haven't seen these - here's a pic taken from when the guys were filming the swimming pool scene. Jiong Min was really feeling the cold and was physically shivering quite badly. Xu Bin swam over and wrapped himself around Jiong Min (in a very BL looking hug) to try and help warm him up. The actual BTS footage is quite cute to watch. The gif is an outtake from the tent kiss with Xu Bin being his usual mischievous self!

These two are still constantly hanging out together, even though the actual filming of the series finished more than 18 months ago. Seems like their real life bromance is continuing to simmer along nicely. For Jiong Min's birthday in October, Xu Bin took him out for the night; just the two of them 🤭, and since they're still living rent free inside my head, I'm making no apologies for my delulu thoughts or adding these recent pictures here:

I'm not really sure what to make of this new statement... Translation: "The radio drama "Brother Don't Run - Part 2" is adapted from the famous TV series "Brother Don't Run". Quan Thanh Company will exclusively introduce the second half of the work "Brother Don't Run" through the form of a radio drama. This time we will introduce the second half of the story through voice actors for fans of the original film, so that the audience can immerse themselves in the emotions of the characters, and experience the profound panoramic sound."* 'Brother Don't Run' was the name used by Third Party Chinese streaming services.
