Hello, all! Below is a poem I wrote some time ago in reverence for the Silmarillion:
enjoy, if you wish:
ALQUALONDE
Long ago on the silver shores of Alqualonde, I clutched the Noldorin gems: Cold gleams stained with argent sand, Piercing pearls like fallen stars in teeming tidal pools.
In my song and memory, still I stand there, looking Outward from the Deathless Shores upon a disturbing Sea, the tickled waters where Ulmo's treasured shrouds Are so profound, even Mandos knows not their Deeps.
And I recalled the dark before it was darkness, The light before lightless shadow swooped, Mocking Manwe's Eagles, veiling Varda's dome With Melko's hate and Ungoliant's venomed breath.
Light before Sun and Moon was forever perished, Irrevocable, but endured in silima and song. Yet Elentari's tears, so fiercely shimmering, Relit the sightless shores and distant brow of Eldamar.
I sang my song to the timeless winds and waves Brushing the blessed brink, guiltless yet gored, So the sand was as woe'd with wounds As Manwe's heart by Feanaro's broken vow.
Mighty came the Mariners in their samite ships To berth the foam-specked quays with periling Shadows that keened the Calaciryan glimmering, Like Noldorin blades upraised in everduring challenge.
But I tarried there on the shores of Shadowmere, And stilled my melancholy songs: Cold lays weeping with rue'd dismay, Sorrowing airs on the silver shores of Alqualonde.

I guess I should explain:
This is a poem inspired by JRR Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion', one of my all-time favorite works. I've actually had someone translate it into Sindarin, but have since lost this somewhere. If I find it, I'll put it up.

Hello, all! Below is a poem I wrote some time ago in reverence for the Silmarillion: enjoy, if you wish: ALQUALONDE . . . And I recalled the dark before it was darkness, The light before lightless shadow swooped, . . . Light before Sun and Moon was forever perished, Irrevocable, but endured in silima and song. . . . Holy cow! (not very poetic I know... forgive me.) Loved it... more so even when read aloud (the poem seems to suit the hoarseness of my voice... a hoarseness I normally dislike.) Please feel free to post some more, were it for the sole purpose of reconciling me, however briefly, with the sound of my voice. Are you a writer?

heyyas, neand48!
I'm glad you liked it. It is a bit short. I used an alliterative style specifically designed to 'show case' how English sounds phonetically. It's an old English mode normally used for tale-telling. Good of you to pick up on that.
Writer, yes. Not published, though. I write lyrics, stories, poems and so on. Musician and artist as well.
Happy you enjoyed it. So, have you read the Silmarillion?

When you talk about Sindarin are you referring to the cuneiform-like writing used in The Hobbit? As for the sound/cadence of poetry, I owe it all to a professor I had years ago. He taught us Latin... he strongly believed that the rhythm was nearly as important as the words, and he would have us use our hands and our voice to follow the rhythm. I still remember a famous line: Intendunt pelago pariter Quad littora tendunt.where the poet talks about a two-headed monster heading towards the shore... the movement of our hands duplicating the the movement of the waves. It is at that time that I started appreciating the soul of poetry. Sorry about the long discourse... I would hate to be imposing, but could you post more of your poems?

Well, mostly, I have lyrics available---not true epic poems. Alqualonde needs to be continued.
If you don't mind lyrics, sure, I can do those. I've been thinking of a new one to commemorate my recently awesome news. I have the music for it mapped out a bit.

And what awesome news would that be? if you don't mind my asking that is. It's so cold here this morning (-2C with the windchill) that I need some cheering up. JF
