This just came out on Friday; it's a popular adaptation of the "Grishaverse" series of young-adult fantasy novels. I gather it has departed a bit from the books because the series creator has merged two different series together and that obviously needed some tweaks. There is a regular queer character, who is also Black (yay diversity!), in Jesper. Apparently his most famous gay romance doesn't occur until a later book, but it's anyone's guess where it will fit into the show's chronology, or if they even plan to introduce that love interest. However, they do touch on his sexuality in the first season, and surprisingly he's the only character who gets to have sex. It doesn't affect the plot in any way - his lover is a guest star who only appears in that episode - but it's nice to be included considering they could very easily have left it out. Jesper is fairly embedded throughout the story but the explicitly gay content takes place in episode 5. Here's an interview with the actor who plays Jesper, Kit Young: www.digitalspy.com/tv/ustv/a36117402/shadow-and-bone-jesper-queer-sex-bisexual/

I been on the fence about this show. Is the rest of it any good? I enjoyed it, but then I love the fantasy genre. It's very lavish world-building, I adore Ben Barnes, but the rest of his co-stars were the real revelation to me. So nice to see them make the show diverse, with the author's full support. It's gotten some very good reviews too. I suspect a second season is pretty much a done deal, unless the ratings aren't enough to justify (what must be) a huge production cost. I'm interested to see where they take Jesper's story from here. In the books, he apparently has a pretty epic gay romance.

There will be season 2! Hopefully we get the introduction of a regular love interest for Jesper.

And it looks like we will! They just announced some new cast members for season 2, which has begun production in Budapest. In the books, Wylan (to be played by Jack Wolfe - on the far right) is a love interest for Jesper. http://instagram.com/p/CYrRmHwrykr

A few too many storylines and characters this season for our gays to be properly showcased - and if we're honest that's my principal thought about the season as a whole - but they did fare better than a number of others. I know book fans will take issue with the changes to their story, but I think they made it work - if mainly by virtue of the actors. I just wish they had more airtime, especially Jack Wolfe whose Wylan is beyond adorable. But I guess they have to keep something for season 3 (the showrunner envisioned it as the final season) - there are some clear hints of what's to come for the lads if the story continues.

I have just finished catching up on season 1. Although they are minor characters, Ivan and Fedyor from season 1 are in a relationship.

Yes they were too minor to mention but I did appreciate that - I think their relationship was not canon so it was nice of them to slip that in. Unfortunately neither character appears in season 2. (Of course, one of them was shot dead at the end of season 1.)

50M hours viewed
this is bad..... for a second season and even more it's a fantasy show, which had a big budget.
Comparison 1899(cancelled) released during the World Cup and before Christmas 1st week 80M, 2nd week 88M

The hours are not as important as the percentage of people who ended the show.
The big problem with 1899 was that only a 32% of the people who start watching the show complete all the episodes.
One of the reasons Hearstopper was such a hit was because it has a very high engagement. Of course Heartstopper is a show cheap to produce and that's a big diference.
I don't know if Smiley will be renewed (it was a hit in Spain with all it's absurd controversies, never a show so innofensive generated so many controversies) even if it was not an international success, but the fact that it's a show without that many costs make it easier to happen

I tuned in because I thought it would be a ghost story. When it wasn't that at all I felt cheated. My guess is many people felt the same, and that's why they stopped watching. The second half of the season was just awful anyway. Also, they killed off the gay characters, which sucked.
