Finished watching. They flip the usual script for a detective drama by having the main character spend most of his time trying to cover up a crime, rather than solving it. It's an interesting dynamic. Great to see a queer protagonist treated identically to how a straight protagonist on a similar show would be. Often queer characters have some kind of plot point or story element hinging on their queerness. Does anybody knows if there's going to be a season 2? So he's not a good guy or morally grey like other detectives but a criminal. A gay criminal. If that were the case, there's nothing wrong with that. We can't all be good guys!

How many gay main and side characters, reality and overall TV personalities are there on original Danish TV and Scandinavian crossovers? From the Anglo-English international perspective gay protagonists are extremely rare. Shockingly I know next to nothing about Denmark. In media I consume Scandinavia, lumped all in one, serves mostly as example of social utopia, source of Nordic Noir and in lists of examples for the far right resurgence in Europe. Grenseland is a Norwegian series, not Danish.

Well, Denmark is a small country and there's not many people living in Scandinavia compared to other places and countries in the world. Norway did also create 'Skam' so they're definitely doing better in regards to creating gay characters in TV series being shown to the rest of the world. There's a reason why I watch shows from the US and the UK.. not sure if it's a good thing Scandinavia "serves mostly as example of social utopia, source of Nordic Noir and in lists of examples for the far right resurgence in Europe" but I guess it could be worse? Other countries are not doing great either with far right politics and politicians... just sitting here, waiting for the world to implode any minute now. Rita is Danish? I know Denmark had registered partnerships first in Europe but marriage relatively late. The UK has decent gay representation across most media. So if there are a few gay villains or negative stereotypes they don't weight too heavily. In other countries with far fewer examples and role models in media those bad gays always gnaw away at the overall acceptance of real live gay people. Usually the lists depending on national and political spin start with Trump, Brexit, Orban, Erdogan and Front National, AfD, PiS and now Lega, sometimes Modi. Occasionally those lists will reference far right groups in Scandinavia. Rita is Danish but it wasn't quite the phenomenon Skam was I don't know why we were so late with gay marriages in Denmark because we're actually not that religious. We are kinda slow though, so that make sense I guess... The portrail of gays on TV has definitely gotten better (in the UK) with time and it nice to have both the good and the bad - Brendan from Hollyoaks is just one of those characters people never forget. It's because people are so fucking pale here that they're jealous of people with darker skin. But the biggest political party we have in Denmark is a far right group so maybe that's why all the other popular groups are referencing us?? Never understood how people can be so hateful to others without even knowing them... but our prime minister doesn't only hate people of colour but also public employees so fuck the elderly, sick people and children too !! I don't need a job anyways.. so you know, it's truly a wonderful world we live in <3 Trump who?

There was talk of Denmark and Swedish before. Rude as that may be I cannot tell the difference between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian.

Accept if a country doesn't have a wider variety of representation in the media then it can be a problem. This is a gay protagonist. Those are extremely rare everywhere.

No problem, I think most of us are pretty used to it But yeah, Grenseland is Norwegian, so they deserve kudos for a great show Anyone heard anything about a season 2 yet?
