Riverdale is a live action remake of the Archie comics. I had posted earlier in the Shortland Street thread that KJ Apa had been cast as Archie. Now they have casted the gay character from the comics, Kevin Keller: tvline.com/2016/03/12/riverdale-cw-archie-pilot-cast-kevin-keller-gay-teen-casey-cott/I have to say to get the iconic looks of the characters right from the comics, they are going to need a lot of hair dye I have no idea when the show is going to air. The article above does have the list of characters that have been so far cast.

They didn't really need to change his hair color, it wasn't one of Kevin Keller's defining feature. Really, only Archie, Betty and Veronica's haircolor is a big part of their character.

I'm keen to see what comes of this. I hope the CW is committed to bringing this to series. (It's only a pilot at this stage, right? With a possibility to be picked up for the 2016-17 season?) I see it's being adapted by the comics' chief creative officer, which gives me hope that it'll remain true to the original. The CW's track record does include shows like The 100 so I don't think the network will shy away from the darker aspects.
I enjoyed KJ Apa on Shortland Street so will be happy to see his take on Archie. (It doesn't hurt that the synopsis seems to suggest there'll be some ogling of his physique, which is indeed impressive.) Casey Cott is handsome but I can't comment on his acting. I hope Kevin gets to be a fairly major character.
I saw, much to my disappointment, that there are people trying to stir up controversy over the perceived lack of diversity. I don't see any basis for this complaint: Archie's being played by a Maori, Josie's been cast with an African-American actress and Kevin's a gay character.

I'm actually a bit concerned about whether CW will actually go through with it since they just renewed every single one of their shows. Wonder if that would result in CW pushing the release or just passing on it?
In the new reboot of the Archie comics, Jughead is asexual, so if they include that as part of the TV show, that would also help. Also, for most of the remaining big characters, like Dilton, Moose and others, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to do blind casting since their main characteristics have never been their race.

It could be a summer show or a midseason replacement. Beauty and the Beast is airing it's final season this summer and they cancelled the Messengers, which was a midseason show. Or they could do what ABC did with the Marvel shows with the DC shows and have Legends air when Arrow and Flash are on hiatus, which leaves room for another show in the fall. A lot of creative possibilities. It would be interesting if they include an asexual Jughead. There really hasn't been any representation of asexuality (except briefly on the US version of Sirens), and I think it would be great to have a show geared towards teens include a population that really isn't talked about.

This will be on The CW if it's picked up, right? I don't want to be skeptical, but I can't help it. The CW has a horrible track record when it comes to gay characters, male ones anyway. The gay guy on Gossip Girl didn't get to kiss his boyfriend, same goes for David Singh on The Flash. David didn't get to kiss his fiancé, they were only allowed a hug. Nathan Miller on The 100 got to kiss his boyfriend... eventually. But he was only allowed one hug after he thought his boyfriend had died, and I wouldn't be surprised if he never kisses his boyfriend again. One kiss is all they are allowed. I think this show would be better on ABC or FOX or something. IF it's even picked up. Who knows, they may decide not to go for it, maybe they think it's "too gay". Sorry if I don't trust the CW though. They seem to have an issue with gay male characters.

Article on the pilot script, contains spoilers: www.bleedingcool.com/2016/02/29/ive-also-read-pilot-script-riverdale-lgbtq-televised-archie-universe/OK, now this sounds A LOT more grown up than I expected it to. Wow, I'm surprised! Seems like they've changed some things from the comics, but in a good way, made it more realistic. I just hope we actually get to see this on screen. I want The CW to pick it up. But if they don't, do you think there's a possibility another channel or network will, or some streaming service like Netflix perhaps? We all know how much Netflix likes its LGBT characters Actually, I wouldn't mind if someone else other than The CW picked it up, because I really doubt The CW would do it justice, I'm not even sure they'd go for it as it sounds too adult for them. If they do pick it up though I'm sure they'll censor it to make it more acceptable to the kiddies and tweens, sigh.

Wow... agree with that statement... did not expect that. Hope all the stuff they mentioned actually make it to the show and don't get edited out. I'm happy they are changing things from the comics. Considering they wanted to do a show that is "real", the comics is frankly quite unrealistic. It does seem a bit much for CW, but I live in hope...

Didn't know they are filming in Vancouver. Wonder if it is possible to figure out where in Vancouver they are filming at, since I live there.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the pilot script's direction for Kevin Keller - the character was always rather vanilla in the comics. Assuming the CW has kept this intact - and I don't think there's a firm reason to doubt that - I expect the show will do just fine. I wouldn't assume that, even if the show was to be picked up by Netflix, it would mean they would take more risks. I suspect it all boils down to the target audience. Look at the Netflix revival of Degrassi - it's as tame as the last season was, and not as daring as the original recipe Degrassi.
KJ Apa is just delicious, but that pic makes it clear he's a bottle redhead. They did not extend the use of the hair dye to his treasure trail or forearms ...

This twitter is a great resource: twitter.com/cwriverdalenewsLooks like they are done filming the pilot though. But if it gets picked up I'd definitely use that twitter to see where/when they will be filming Oh and btw, apparently May 19th is the date we get to know if Riverdale will be picked up or not. I hope they don't edit too much out, because it sounds good just as it is. I'm thinking that the characters talking about sex isn't too R-rated for the CW. They had The Carrie Diaries where the characters openly talked about sex, so it should be ok for the gay character to do it too. I want the gay character to be treated the same. If the straights get to kiss and have sex I hope the gay character gets to also. But I'm not expecting anything explicit (for either the straight characters or the gay characters). What usually happens is some making out on the bed before it cuts out and then you see the characters again "post sex". I see this as realistic for the gay character too. Heck.. if we got anything close to that I'd be thrilled! And about KJ Apa.. yeah I agree he's hot but it's obvious that his hair isn't actually red. Gingers usually have a different red/orange color. Idk.. it's just obvious that his hair is brown and they put dye in it to make it look more ginger-y.

Yah, the shade of orange/red is kinda off to me. Hopefully it is something they can correct? or maybe it will settle to a more natural redhead colour if it was just dyed?
Riverdale will have a built in audience that knows about Archie. I'm not sure if that is good or bad. Certainly, there will be a number of people who will not pay attention to the show since they assumed it will be like the old wholesome Archie comics. After all, it is only very recently that the Archies comics started to get more realistic.
I have to say, the Untitled Mars Project pilot sounds cool, but I'm not sure if it really fit CW that much. The other shows being considered really doesn't seem to fit with CW's preference for drama. Hopefully, that will bode well for Riverdale.

The other shows being considered really doesn't seem to fit with CW's preference for drama. Hopefully, that will bode well for Riverdale. Although I would have preferred his hair more red (closer to his natural brown hair), he does look good with the orange hair even if it does look a bit unnatural. He is playing a character from a comic book after all! Besides, the hair is very similar to that in the comics, so it is accurate. I think the buzz created already by just having two famous/popular actors in the main roles is a good strategy. Has there ever been paps stalking sets of a pilot? Not even a full blown show, but just a pilot before it gets picked up? I can't tell if this is unusual or not. Seems like there's already a lot of buzz surrounding the show. Like.. it was even in the Daily Mail. And then there's the fact that Greg Berlanti is a guy who usually gets his shows picked up. Honestly.. I think it will be hard for The CW to turn it down. On the other hand.. they already renewed all their shows for more seasons, so I'm not sure if this bodes well or bad for Archie. I'd like to think they have faith in it otherwise they wouldn't have ordered the pilot. But it could be they turn it down simply because they don't have any more room for more shows. But I guess if they really want it they'll make it work. We won't know for sure until it's actually confirmed. Maybe we'll know more when the pilot has finished post-production, what people who have seen it think of it. Even if it doesn't get picked up by The CW it still doesn't have to be the end, honestly.. it sounds almost made for Netflix, with the "darker more realistic" Archie. And then there's the gay and asexual characters, Netflix love LGBT representation. I'm hopeful that we will see this become a show, either on The CW or somewhere else. BTW, didn't Fox consider it initially only to bail and leave it to The CW? Idk about the Untitled March Project, it can be awful if it's not done well, it can look unrealistic and wouldn't it be expensive to produce? Hmm.. I just think out of all the pilots they ordered Archie definitely seems to be the one most likely to actually end up a tv show.

This is such a great idea for a series and live-action interpretations of comics are certainly the rage, so I think this show has an excellent chance of being picked up.
KJ Apa is an interesting emerging talent. He may or may not be a good actor, but he is an AMAZING guitarist. No matter what happens, he has a guaranteed career in the music industry.

He's known from his role on Shortland Street, a NZ soap. Apparently he is a good actor, from what I've heard anyway. I just wonder how good his American accent is.

They must be pretty confident it's going to get picked up considering they're still casting people. I know the official date for the announcement is May 19th, but I wonder if there's a chance we'll know anything sooner?

Could be they are confident that CW will pick it up, or that another network would if CW doesn't. I admit, it is unusual to be casting for characters who won't appear in the pilot when the show isn't guaranteed to be picked up. But then, we don't usually have shows where everyone know ahead of time the characters that will be appearing.

Curious about when we'll see it. CW has a full schedule and they need to find a place to put Supergirl. I bet this is a midseason replacement or a fill in when their other shows go on winter break.
