I love Jake and Simon together. I just wish we'd see more of them! Also Simon is an interesting character and deserves more screen time and it would be nice if he had his own storyline too, separate from Jake. Then again I know that's not likely, he's just recurring, but still. I find Simon more interesting than Jake, though I like them both of course.

I'm enjoying Cuffs. It's kind of how I want gay characters to show up in television shows. A multi-dimensional main character whose story isn't all about being gay, but whose sexuality isn't ignored or minimalized. "Cuffs" is not about a gay rookie who doesn't fit in or who is discriminated against because he is gay. It's also not about a straight main character with a gay best friend.

Also, Ryan's reaction really disappointed me, I weirdly had a feeling his son was going to be gay for some reason. Jake needs to find a place to live.

Jake and Simon breaking up was a given, even though seeing it still sucked. Yes, I know they were at different places in their lives, Jake wanted a relationship while Simon wanted to be free and sleep around. There's nothing wrong with that. The relationship moved too fast, and Jake was kinda naive not to see what kind of person Simon was like to begin with. It still sucks to see them breaking up though. People can and do change (Connor on HTGAWM etc). Simon could have fought for Jake and the relationship, but he obviously didn't think it was worth fighting for. This means yet another amazing gay couple with amazing chemistry going down the drain. This tv season has just been AMAZING for gay characters! Two fake gays, one former gay, and yet ANOTHER gay couple breaking up. YAY! These two had so much potential and it pisses me off how badly the writers treated them from the start by barely even showing them together. In hindsight it was clear from the start that the writers never gave a damn about their relationship, so breaking them up was not a shock, but yeah.. it still sucked. Not only because they were amazing together, but also because now Simon is most likely gone, and he was such an interesting character, confident, cocky, slightly manipulative. He would have been awesome to have on the show. The solicitor perspective would have been nice to see too (though yeah I know the show is about cops, and the main focus would still be on them). It would be amazing if Simon still stayed as a character even after the break up with Jake, sadly though I don't see it happening, which is a shame. I find Simon more interesting than the naive, boring Jake, but ok. It is what it is.
Ryan in this episode though.. he was a homophobe, plain and simple. He said his own son was disgusting, and indirectly called his partner disgusting. According to the writers we should just forget it, he's not that bad, he's not homophobic. Not only that, let's forgive him!!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K?!? I'm not ok with this, not at all. What Donna said is so BS, "he's not homophobic", HOW DO YOU KNOW?! Just because he's been cordial towards you and respectful towards you does NOT mean he's not homophobic. Having gay friends does not mean you can't be a homophobe, just like having black friends don't make a racist person any less racist. I was BAFFLED when I saw Jake not only forgiving him but moving in with that scumbag. I understand Ryan might have been in shock when he saw his son kissing some other bloke, but we sure as hell saw what he really feels about gay people. Jake should have reported his ass instead of not only forgiving him, but moving in with him. I just cannot accept this development. The show is over for me. I'm done.

Ryan said it out loud that he is not happy that his son is gay. that is nagl at all. I do feel like he is gonna come around soon.
It seems like Jake is still with the solicitor guy after all.

I'm so disappointed with this show. The gay couple barely got 10 minutes of screen time the entire season and looks like they will be breaking up in the finale.

If we could decide who we loved, it would be much simpler, but less magical.

But if Jake isn't treated right or happy in the relationship with Simon. Shouldn't he break it off before he gets more attached.

I'm not surprised. The show wasn't that good. Jake forgiving homophobic Ryan in a split second was laughable. I was baffled. Donna basically said, "we're friends, he likes me so he can't be homophobic!" talk about failed logic. The show in itself should have been on at a later time, it should have been grittier. It all felt a bit pc and pg-13. Also.. we didn't see enough of their home lives. It felt like something was missing. So again.. I'm not surprised. Then again, with the way they treated Simon and Jake, can't say that I'm gutted it's over either.

I thought the show has potential. I don't understand why it was cancelled. I thought the viewership is alright? Hopefully we can see the beautiful Jacob Ifan on screen again, I'm sure he's going places.

I'm saddened, but not surprised, by the cancellation. It was always a risky proposition to create a police drama around a gay protagonist. The BBC is really struggling for funding under assault from all sides, so it needs to create stuff that has wide appeal and marketability. Under its public remit, it can't advertise during the broadcast, so it relies on shopping the show overseas to generate revenue. And how many countries are going to screen a show with an openly gay lead? When not even gay people were willing to support this show (judging by the constant criticism on here) - what more can you expect from a general audience? The ratings weren't exactly terrible but they dropped off by nearly a quarter between the pilot and the finale.
A limited run series like London Spy might get away with it but Cuffs always had the deck stacked against it. I really thought we had hit a turning point when it was announced - having a top-billed gay protagonist on a primetime police drama was unheard of. But I guess it just was not meant to be. This cancellation news rounds out what's been a truly awful year for gay representation on TV worldwide. I do hope we'll see the talented cast - especially Jacob Ifan's sexy face - elsewhere in the near future. It's just too bad that it most probably won't be in another gay role.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. You can't blame the cancellation on having a gay lead. It's not always about the gays (besides.. despite the fact that the character was gay he was written in an annoying way, too immature, stupid, shy, naive. I want a badass gay character for once, please). The show had many issues beside that. At least for me it felt like something was missing. It was too "soft" in a way. It's a police drama, yet I felt like I was watching a children's movie. I wish it had the feel that Southland had. That show was amazing, gritty, real, great acting, great writing.. just all over phenomenal. And that show had a gay lead (I know it eventually got cancelled, but at least it got a couple of seasons). And btw.. I refuse to watch shows JUST because they have gay characters in them. I have skipped a handful of shows because they were just terrible, and I mean AWFUL. If people watch crap, TPTB will continue to give us crap. We need to demand good shows. I don't think we should just settle, not in this day and age where there's many gay characters on tv. It shouldn't be "this show has a gay character, so everyone MUST support it". That just feels wrong. I do however agree that this has been a TERRIBLE year for gays.. with one show getting cancelled, two fake gays, a crazy terrorist gay, and a former gay. It's like we took 10 steps back. I don't understand how this could happen. And most of the characters were written by gay men smh. Oh well.. everyone should just look at it like this: it can't get much worse. The year is coming to a close. Here's hoping for a year with better gays on our screen! I know there's a couple of show in particular that I look forward to, Shadowhunters and Hit The Floor. Oh, and there's a couple of soaps that I'll continue to watch, of course
