The first couple of episodes here on BBC America were good. I'm looking forward to watching the rest.

I absolutely love this show which I watched because of the wonderful Ben Whishaw! (if you haven't watched him in Lilting you are missing out on an epic performance). He is just so real that sometimes I feel like I'm intruding on his privacy and I have to look away and he is no different in this. It isn't particularly happy but this isn't a romance. It's a spy show that just happens to have gay characters in it which is nice to see! No angsty coming out or aggressive reactions to first kisses. Just two people. Hopefully we will see more and more of these shows in the next couple of years.

OMG at episode 4! Danny can't catch a break and now what they've done to Scottie! The secret reveal was a bit silly imo. They got through episode 4 here yesterday on BBC America. It really is sad what they did to Scotty, but not too surprising. As that one guy said, I would also be surprised if the four of them lasted a week given what they learned. I must admit I was a bit underwhelmed by the secret. I guess I was expecting more. Although, to a certain extent I can see the logic behind why many powerful people wouldn't want there to be a perfect lie detector (hidden for those who haven't seen it). It didn't click with me until later how Scotty's tale of how the FSB would keep potential troublemakers in line is exactly what happened to Danny. At the same time, Danny had absolutely no clue about Alex and it's clear (to me) he had been set up to be the scapegoat for Alex's murder long before he had any idea what the hell was going on. So why all the games with Danny? He didn't know, so why not just leave him alone or just kill him, too? Anyway, it's been really well done and acted. It's been an interesting way to unravel who a man really was. Alex's cold and distant parents, driving him to excel, the resulting isolation and loneliness throughout his life, turning to that servant as a surrogate mother, rejecting his given name, the very high expectations and associated stress, the likely guilt over lying to the man he probably fell in love with*. I can't wait for the finale next week. * I've found Alex a little hard to read, and I think that's on purpose, but it makes me wonder just how he felt for Danny.

He admitted in the first episode he had never dated anyone and the second time they met he looked so... Taken aback. And I doubt very much he planned to show any interest or confirm what Danny had already suspected about him being gay. I guess that's why it's so tragic! They find in each other someone who sees the parts that aren't visible and are so important to be understood. But this show wasn't a romance it was a angsty spy thriller so no happy ending for the hero!

Yeah, having seen the finale now, I agree. In the scene with Alex before he "died," when he was told he had to leave everyone behind, the first person he thought of was Danny. The first question he hesitated to answer. Incidentally, I put "died" in quotes because, considering the kind of show this is, it may very well be a misdirection. She told him he had to leave everyone behind. Presumably that would include his "mother", too. Part of me would like for there to be another series where it's revealed he's still alive, but I doubt that will happen. That scene before Alex "died" was disturbing. I don't necessarily think of myself as claustrophobic, but it looks like they basically suffocated him in that little box. A really gruesome way to go. Reading my last post again, my description of Alex was kind of wrong, lol. I must admit, I didn't expect the twist about who Alex's real mother was. Anyway, it's been really well done and acted. It's been an interesting way to unravel who a man really was. Alex's cold and distant parents, driving him to excel, the resulting isolation and loneliness throughout his life, turning to that servant as a surrogate his biological mother, rejecting his given second name, the very high expectations and associated stress, the likely guilt over lying to the man he probably fell in love with. Lastly, I like how they left the ending open and I'm curious if there will ever be a second series. Danny is still alive. He apparently inherited Scottie's possessions. And Alex's "second" mom is going to help him go after the people who murdered Alex.
