I like the pilot, it may nave been a little cliche but sometime cliche can work when you're trying to establish characters. Also loving the fact that Jamal story and the relationship he have with both of his parents seem to be a the front of the show. The flashback scenes where absolutely heart breaking, looking forward to the next episode.
Also Cookie is everything!

It's too bad there isn't more discussion here. I was pleasantly drawn in by the show's opening. I'm still cautious because it's on FOX and there's huge potential for things to go downhill extremely fast with this mix of soap, drama and comedy. But it was an entertaining watch.
Taraji is awesome, but can anything else be expected from her? I actually would say that so far the show's biggest strength is its actors, because a lot of things that they manage to deliver seamlessly might look really dodgy on paper. As fabulous as Cookie is though, she's not exactly the greatest parent either. But her relationship with Jamal does stand out and so do their scenes together. Jamal's stage performance with the montage of the trash can scene was particularly powerful. I hope the show continues to positively surprise at least for a while.

I'm enjoying Empire so much. My sister and I have a weekly viewing session. The topics are current, the writing doesn't try to hide or shy away from how these particular characters react and relate to one another AND the music/talent is amazing.
I wonder if Lucious will somehow find out, in the final episodes of the first season, that he was misdiagnosed with ALS, because this show will definitely get the greenlight for a second season from FOX.
Cookie/Taraji is fabulous!!!

This show’s characters are all so entertainingly flawed, and they don’t pretend not to be. Cool music and talented kids. Even when it’s a mess, it’s an entertaining one.
Jamal should learn to stand up to both his father and his mother. One may think that his giving in to his father’s threat about coming out is just a rich spoiled kid not wanting to let go of material things. But when we think about it, those are the one thing that he actually gets from his father, the man he so desperately continues to want so much yet so little (love, validation, etc.) from. He gets those stripped away and there’s nothing else for him from the man, or so it seems. I’d also like to know whether Michael does anything for himself. His “we do” care about Lucious’s opinion made me wonder. We’ll see.
Hakeem’s bond with Jamal is the best thing about that character. Tearing it apart like both parents are working at is likely to have the actual effect of wrecking them both. We got some hints about Andre, but there seems to still be some obscure spots there. His wife’s got his balls for sure though.
It’s interesting that all three kids separately have taken the more remarkable facets of Lucious. Andre’s got his business sense without the musical talent. Hakeem’s got his drive, brass and showmanship without the smarts to balance them out, though he's still young. And Jamal’s got his raw talent, which is just too bad for Lucious.
And that bib, that glorious bib, who came up with going there? Ha ha!

Liked episode 2.
The character are being fleshed out more.
Taraji as Cookie is fantastic.
I agree with macari that Hakeem relationship with Jamal is his most redeemable feature, but what is also interesting is how distant Andre seems to be from his brother, one would expect that the oldest brother to be very protective of his younger brothers but he seem to not care for them at all, I would like to know more about why Andre is like this.
Strangely,I think that out of all his sons Lucious sees most of himself in Jamal.
At the end of the day Lucious is the only parent that have been there for most of his life,I don't think he would want to completely lose any connection to his father that he still have.

Strangely,I think that out of all his sons Lucious sees most of himself in Jamal. More than that, but for the obvious prejudices he has, I think Lucious even sees Jamal as the better version of himself, and it kills his homophobic self that the son who would have been his clear favorite otherwise is gay. Some of the statements from Lee Daniels were a bit problematic for me and I just hope that won't reflect itself too much into the show a la Ryan Murphy. I'd like this show to start and stay good.

Jamal's daddy issues run so deep, as do Hakeem's mommy issues it seems. I wonder how many older girlfriends the latter's gotten to call "mama". Andre and Rhonda continue to be a team, a pretty messed up one, but a team all the same and no one can claim not to be messed up in this show anyway. She really seems to know him better than anyone else. "I'm you, but on steroids". Ain't that the truth, and everyone can see it, from Hakeem to Lucious himself. Build up that confidence, Jamal. But even when he stands up to his dad and walks, it's still all about Lucious and his validation or lack thereof for him. He can tell him he loves him and vow to get him back for mistreating him in the same breath. Quite sad but still a nice new change of pace. I'd like to know again if Michael does anything or has anyone else. Jamal losing his apartment apparently also means Michael has nowhere to go either. Cookie and Lucious can still get each other and get to each other in spite of everything. I'm not sure Lucious would have gone to Jamal's without Cookie's pep talk, so to speak. I like how Lucious called Jamal before showing up, as if not to witness or interrupt anything, unlike Cookie in the last episode. Another funny was how Lucious admitted that he was responsible for Bunky's death unnoticed, because obviously you can't lie in church. Pretty solid episode, even with lots of cheese. Good pacing. Seeing Gladys, Cuba and Naomi was cool, not over the top, and they were well integrated into the show, which isn't always the case when it comes to celebrity casting like this. The ladies in this show just kill it, including Anika who was shining in this episode, making her interactions with Cookie even more fun. I like how they're not really portrayed as mere submissive support systems in this power driven world. I also liked how Cookie was herself but more understated this time; that can allow her not to turn into a walking parody/caricature and to show development of other characters as well.
