So, I've found out I am definately not the only straight girl who likes some guykissage! I read that 75% of the viewers of QAF were straight women and I've heard other similar stories too - Like a lot of the viewers loving the Bronne Bromance on Make Me A Supermodel were women too. *eyes signature* I don't mind that I have a wee obsession with guykissin, but I wonder why so many other women do too? Is it just appreciation of love in whichever form? Or maybe it's seeing a more tender side of men... that we may not be used to from straight men?? Or because men are the sex we are attracted to; so seeing two of them together is like double the testosterone hotness? ;D Why does it draw you in??  |

I'd have to agree with Nanna on this one: Definitely all of the above. And as my friend once pointed out to me there are three kinds of girls: lesbians, straight girls who like straight guys, and straight girls who like gay guys. Of which he informed me I was clearly part of the third group. LOL.
I've also kind of reached the point where, in relation to TV and movies and things, straight couples just aren't that interesting. They all have the same story and it's always told the same way. I need something new and different to keep my interest.

I would say this :
1. most of women are romantic, so we would follow any good love story no matter if the characters are gay or straight
2. as women we are naturally curious, so seeing a gay love story is something different and interesting
3. as straight woman I love men, so for me 2 beautiful men together are unambiguously twice attractive
4. and if the characters are beautifully written and acted as Christian and Oliver, well this is a cherry on top ;D

I'm probably not the best to reply this question ;D , but I talk about it with my best friend, and for her it's not about double testosterone ration. She tell me a big part of her attraction on gay stories is forbidden love. Most women dream about absolute love, and to show how a love is powerful, it needs barrier, it must be very difficult to be beautiful. Every good love stories are about people who can't be together because of the society, best exemple Romeo and Juliet. Today, money, social class, race, religion ... are not enough dramatic for the imagination (but could be very difficult in real life  ) Same gender couple are the least accepted, so the more romantic... A why gay and not lesbian ... because "testosterone hotness", we all agree, there's nothing better then a beautiful man ;D |

^^ Very true. I forgot about that. It's definately a factor for me too. I love when the story involves the fact that they probably shouldn't be together... Like the plot in Latter Days eventhough I didn't really like the actors in that one. My fave though, must be storylines where one of them is "straight" and suddenly realises that maybe he isn't... Like in VL, AWZ and ATWT (ugh).. also in Summerstorm I actually wanted Tobi and Achim and Schorsi and his eviiiil gay "seducer" to be together.  And I secretly want Ronnie and Ben from Make Me A Supermodel to have an affair.  |

I mean it's more or less necessary. After all, if you can get all gay men and all straight women to watch something you love the ratings will be higher and as a result a show will stay on the air, or a network will that the chance and the subject matter will be presented to a wider audience. After all in pure numbers there are a lot of straight women, so when it comes to things like entertainment and money has to be made, numbers are a good thing (not to mention when it comes to things like getting people to vote on things like gay marriage). After all the writers and actors and producers of these kind of shows have to be able to feed themselves and if women make that happen, so be it, I guess. (plus, gayfriendly women will likely one day be gayfriendly mothers and hopefully raise gayfriendly children) On the other hand I wonder if there aren't times when it feels kinda like tons of men hanging out on a pro feminism board and discussing about how they would like to see Lara Croft and Wonder Woman in a mudwrestling match. LOL. Kinda of they might mean well, but they can still occasionally totally miss the point and/or have lack of interest in some of the issue that are essential to the people who are actually directly affected. |

I suppose that homofobic behaviour is generally more young men issue, girls are much more easier in this case ...... at least the girls I know. |

Coming out make really good story for a show, but I prefer stories talking about gay men who know who they are. I love JP and Craig (as every one), but it's because JP's such a drama queen, and Craig's such a b**ch ;D (and James and Guy are great) For a storyline, I prefer JP and Kieron (he can't come out, but he perfectly know and accept himself), or Roman and Andrew. And that's why my favorite will prebably be for a very long time Brian and Justin. (No sexuality confusion, but love ... and sex ;D) For Ronnie and Ben, I totally agree... So hot together on Ben's bed. (And I think, when Ben hung his wife or Ronnie, it's the same thing ... but I watch too much soap ) |

I find that I like the way the characters deal with the emotions & feelings in the gay couples versus the majority of Het pairings. So many Het pairings always make it about "women being complicated/demanding" versus men "being stupid/blind". When you take out the element of the gender stereotypes and have a pairing where the parties are the same sex, then you get passed that lazy, overused writing staple of overcoming the gender stereotypes of "women are overly demanding" & "men are completely obtuse" to more gritty emotions and how the 2 characters connect. Gah, I think my Anthro degree is rearing it's ugly head.  This is not to say I don't still love my chick flicks. I still watch those more than I should but I've gotten pickier about them as I've gotten older.

Yeah, I never had problems still liking hetero pairings either and I like to think that I don't blindly like all gay pairings. And lesbian pairings can be good too if the story is right (I don't care how straight you are, Bound is hot; it's all about the story).
I do think that at this point gay pairings just stick out more, so I'm more apt to notice them.
I was thinking of that in regards to Thore vs. Igor. Because we have been talking about whether or not the AWZ writers straightified Igor because he became so popular. Thore is a good looking guy, but sort of going throught his pictures and storylines from the Nico/Coco stories I kept thinking that despite his looks he probably would never have worked as a *lead* soap hero, the way let's say Leonhard and I think Gregor could be and Sebastian is built up to be. He just doesn't have the right look for it. So even if they straightified him, I have a hard time picturing him reaching much storyline popularity with it. Take Andi from VL, based on everything I have seen it seems that he was really hot and the fans really loved him, but somehow he never successfully made the jump towards main leading man, instead spending his time in nice side storylines (just like Nico/Christian/Coco was). So I think being in a gay couple might actually be good in this case for Thore/Christian because it might just be his niche when he wouldn't really cut it against the other leading men.
With Igor, I don't approve of it and I have my doubts that it will work, but here I can see more why somebody might think that he could be a leading man (of course, as of now I'm still unconvinced that they are really trying to straightify him, I'm still watching how the storyline develops).

But I would like to know what the gay men here think about us. Well, I for one welcome the opportunity to experience different perspectives. To what extent those differences are determined by one's sex/orientation is something I hesitate to speculate upon, though. I will venture to say that I think over time we'll probably learn that viewpoints differ widely even within demographics on some items. Take 'coming out' storylines as an example. At first glance, one might assume that we as men-loving-men might share a difference in perspective from straight women because of our personal experience with coming out ourselves. Whereas a heterosexual woman presumably never has to go through this, for same-sex oriented men it's actually a neverending series of experiences, some more significant than others, but nevertheless a 'lifelong process'. But when you start talking to sso'd men about those experiences, you may find that they vary considerably - both in what happened, how they responded to it initially and how it continues to affect their lives. A few things I don't like (and haven't noticed taking place here so far): 1) The mistaken notion that being with the "right" woman would make us turn away from men 2) Stereotyping of men generally as (insert characteristic here) 3) Stereotyping of same-sex oriented men as (insert characteristic here). Men don't all experience being a man in the same way, and we don't all experience having a same-sex orientation in the same way. There are common threads of experience that one person may share with a great many others within the selected demographic, but they shouldn't be misinterpreted as absolute rules. The fact that certain members of a demographic may buy into a specific stereotype themselves doesn't validate it. Interesting thread! |

I think generally women (regardless if they are straight or not) tend to be more accepting. I think it's their innate characteristic. But personally I'm surprise that many straight women love gay stories. I think the part that it could be true that gay men are portrayed to be more loving and more romantic than their straight counterparts, so I guess women found that special quality missing in the majority of the straight males. And about heterosexual pairing, my favourite is gotta be Buffy and Angel, as much I would like to have Angel all by myself, but I love the chemistry they share. And I love Buffy, so it's right of her to be with Angel. Actually Riley is not bad with Buffy, but of course Angel is better. And the second would be Willow and Oz. I thought they look so cute together. I was never really fond of Tara and Willow together even though I like Tara this character. And not to forget, when I was young, I thought Tommy and Kimberly of the Power Rangers are so good together. |

Meanwhile I know lots of girls and women who feel the same. So it's definitely no rarity. I can't really say why I feel about it this way but I know that it's not only about sex. When I watch those videos in which two guys are making out but there are no feelings between them and there's no chemistry between them then it really bores me. But if the couple is really cute and you can feel the love and the suspense between them it's just hot and gives me a good feeling. I really can say: I'm glad for the feelings that I have and I don't want to miss them anymore. There are days which would be completely boring to me if there wouldn't exist gay couples!!^^ That's the truth!! |

Very interesting thread!! It's a few years ago when I realized that I love to see two gay guys together. At the beginning I found it a little bit strange but I accepted these feelings very quickly. Meanwhile I know lots of girls and women who feel the same. So it's definitely no rarity. I can't really say why I feel about it this way but I know that it's not only about sex. When I watch those videos in which two guys are making out but there are no feelings between them and there's no chemistry between them then it really bores me. But if the couple is really cute and you can feel the love and the suspense between them it's just hot and gives me a good feeling. I really can say: I'm glad for the feelings that I have and I don't want to miss them anymore. There are days which would be completely boring to me if there wouldn't exist gay couples!!^^ That's the truth!! Amen sista! |
