On September 19, 2011, a new play called “8″ by Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar) premiered on Broadway in an exclusive reading to benefit American Foundation for Equal Rights. The play, which chronicles the federal marriage equality trial Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now called Perry v. Brown), was directed by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello (Take Me Out) and featured an all-star cast including: Morgan Freeman, John Lithgow, Bradley Whitford, Christine Lahti, Ellen Barkin, Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson, Rob Reiner, Bob Balaban, Jane Houdyshell, Yeardley Smith, Anthony Edwards, Campbell Brown, Rory O’Malley, Larry Kramer, Stephen Spinella, K. Todd Freeman, Ken Leung, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Ben Rosenfeld and Kate Shindle.
The evening played to a sold-out house of over 1,100 and raised over $1 million to fund the federal lawsuit for marriage equality.
