The L.A. Complex is a new Canadian primetime soap (think Melrose Place) airing on CTV and MuchMusic. It has also been acquired by The CW, and should air in the USA in the spring. The show is about a bunch of aspiring musicians/actors/dancers living in an apartment complex in L.A. Again - very Melrose Place-ish. Tbh, I don't totally love the show yet (the main girl is insufferable, imo), but I tuned in due to my geek love for Jewel Staite (from Firefly!!). But I was pleasantly surprised to see in last night's episode that one of the main characters, Tariq, is gay. Last night was the second episode of the show, and the first indication of Tariq's sexuality. His love interest, Kaldrick (who is ridiculously sexy), appears in the cast photo for the show, so I assume he will also be a prominent character, and their story will be ongoing. Yay! Tariq Kal I have clipped all of Tariq and Kal's scenes from the second episode. I will try to go back later and clip Tariq's scenes from the first episode as well, though again, there was no romance in that episode. I am somewhat concerned that this show (due to its being acquired to air later in the US) will get my YouTube account flagged, so I have set up another YouTube account to keep my Geoff/Pavel account from getting burned. Fingers crossed.... DOWNLOAD LINKS: Episode 102 Edit @ MegaUploadEpisode 102 Edit @ MediaFire

these two guys look quite handsome together. I don't know much about their backgrounds but I watched that first part twice in a row, it was so fascinating that I wanted to pay attention to how they interact. thank you for starting this thread!

So excited. Love Canadian shows and it seems like a great, relatable cast. Doesn't hurt that both actors are hotties! Thanks for bringing this to us!

I like that there are two gay black men on television. I don't like the lame stereotypical down low storyline. I hope the writers don't fall into stereotypes when developing the characters.

I actually think that within the context of a show set in the entertainment industry, and particularly with these guys being in rap music, it is EXTREMELY realistic for them to be on the down low. I mean, honestly. Can you think of any out gangster rappers? Can you really imagine that if a famous gangster rapper came out, it wouldn't destroy his career? It's not stereotypical so much as it is realistic to acknowledge that this is a sector with a great deal of homophobia, where coming out is often not an option. If this show was a very realistic, gritty drama, I wouldn't be surprised if Kal never came out. Tariq, being behind the scenes, stands a better shot at coming out, but I would still expect him to face a great deal of backlash every day if he did so. That being said, this is NOT a gritty and realistic show, lol, so I do think a happier ending is possible for the guys.

Also we KNOW there are a lot of closeted rappers right now whom folks in the industry know are gay.
I don't like the phrase "on the down low" it makes is seem like black men being closeted due to fear of homophobia is some how worse than white men being closeted due to fear of homophobia.
I know the hip hop community uses that term
But, I don't like it.

Tbh, HQ75, I wasn't aware that the term "down low" referred specifically to black men. I mean, I knew it was more of a slang term used most often by rappers etc, but I thought it still universally applied to all closeted men, regardless of race.
The more you know...

Glad you're enjoying it!
I have already grown annoyed with maintaining 2 YouTube accounts, lol, so I'll probably post the next videos on my TubedOutAgain account, and fingers crossed I don't get burned for the gamble. I'll also go back and post Tariq's scenes from the first episode (before Kal was introduced) before posting the newest episode (which I think airs Wednesday).

Thanks for the heads up wallywa617! I'll be ready to clip the scnes tonight, hopefully. I have switched back to posting the videos on my regular account, so I really hope this show doesn't cause me any problems. Eek! I reposted Kal and Tariq's scenes from Episode 2 (minus the scenes from the previous episode at the start) and have also posted all of Tariq's scenes from Episode 1 (before Kal was introduced in Episode 2). So we're all caught up and ready to go for tonight. Glad y'all enjoyed it! Unfortunately, the latest episode seems to be late in going up, and I may need to sleep before it's posted for me to clip. Darn!
Thanks for posting that great interview, kevvoi! I agree with the start of the article - I really did not see that ending with Tariq and Kal coming - but it's certainly captured my interest, lol.
"And... things happen! A lot of things happen. These next four episodes are ridiculously amazing, so a lot of people are going to be stunned by what happens."
Sounds incredible!
Also, just in case this bears mentioning, because I know this is so often an issue on shows - the love scene shown between Tariq and Kal was on par with the love scenes between straight people on the show. So they are not being given special edited treatment, which is always nice.
Until I actually get and clip the next episode, here's the preview...

That looks like a good and interesting show! I like it already and wait impatiently for the new episode These two are very hot together (yes, I'm shallow), but I like their dynamics too. I think they can both learn from one another and I am curious, how this soryline will go. I mean, Kal is closeted and I don't think he is interested in coming out. So there is this strong sexual chemistry, and i think they like each other too, and then the fear of getting caught and not having any career. I don't have any clue about rap-music, hip hop or the world of rappers, but I think there is a lot of homophobia for the most part (judging from some lyrics I know) and I think Kal has to be careful. I'm so looking forward to the next episode. It's fresh and dynamic and I hope it stays that way. Thanks tubedout for uploading this! You're a star as always

LOL sorriso, I must admit, I'm more than a little shallow myself - these two are HOT! I think the interview kevvoi posted made it very clear things were definitely staying on the DL, as well. Can you give some hints about what will happen in future episodes? Will this affair stay a secret?
I can guarantee you there are a ton of people on the down-low in the hip-hop world. We're not the type of show that's going to be like, 'Cool, we're going to tell the hip-hop world that it's time to come out!' and all of that stuff. It's going to be true to life, so it has to be a relationship on the DL. We can't just come out and be like, "cool, we're in the hip-hop world, we're proud, we're gay." As much as we'd like to do that, it's just not realistic. So yeah, it's going to be a relationship on the DL. The latest episode has finally come out, so I have clipped Tariq and Kal's scenes. Not a huge amount of screen time (there was a lot going on with a lot of the other characters this week), but the story is moving along at a great pace. I have been getting a lot of questions from personal messages and some in the comments about how The CW's involvement will impact the show. I don't know where the confusion is from, but everything I've read says that The CW purchased the rights to AIR the already produced 6 episodes. They are not producing the show themselves. A further 7 episodes will be produced by the CANADIAN production company based on how well the show does in ratings in Canada. Yes, I'm certain being "sellable" in other large markets helps the show a great deal, but this same company made Degrassi, with its plethora of gay characters, for years, with no concerns about the US market. IF the Canadian production company decides to order more episodes, The CW will then decide to air those 7 episodes based on how well the first 6 did in the US. Honestly, I'm not expecting it to do incrdibly well, for issues having nothing to do with the gay characters. But the network has an open slot, and nothing better, so whatever low ratings it gets may be perfectly fine. Certainly, The CW could choose to edit out the gay content that has already aired in Canada. But I think it's a much different situation when they have bought a show that already has gay content, and when they are producing and writing a show and CHOOSING whether to include gay content. Anyway, here's the latest news from the very reliable Deadline Hollywood and Hollywood Reporter: www.deadline.com/tag/the-l-a-complex/www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/official-cw-buys-la-complex-280127The pertinent bits: The CW has acquired the Canadian soap The L.A. Complex from Epitome Pictures and Canadian broadcaster Bell Media. The youth-skewing network bought six episodes of the one-hour series about Canadians chasing the Hollywood dream first ordered by Bell Media in August 2010, ahead of production in Toronto and Los Angeles in fall 2011. There’s no word yet on another seven episodes that Bell Media could order if the homegrown drama, which bows Tuesday night on CTV and MuchMusic, connects with viewers.
