No Steffi! Don't make me give up all my hopes!!! aaawww I didnt want to! I´m sorry. I´m sure you´ll get it!! It´s just that even I don´t understand the grammar of my own language at all so I´m really impressed if a foreign speaker tries to understand it. ^^ I know you didn't mean to scare me. And I understand your feelings, it's same for me about Italian. When someone intends to study my language, I'm really happy but I also think that it won't be easy for them, because the grammar is really challenging.

It´s easier for me because I´ve learned latin for like 5 years (ok wasnt really good at it though) and its pretty similar in some ways. I´ve been to Italy for 6 weeks back in 2003 and as all the people I´ve met couldn´t speak english properly I tried to learn a little bit italian. But most of the time we used our hands and feet cause it didnt work ^^

Wow, then you know Latin far better than me! ;D There are lots of similarities as for the words, but the grammar is quite different (thanks goodness Italian lost the inflections!) Really? It sounds strange to me. Italians know English so well! ;D Then it makes sense to you why I'm translating VL into Italian... BTW, I hope you'll enjoy those videos, they could help you brush up a little on your Italian!

Remember that I've got quite a sense of humour, so pay attention to what I write, especially if there is this smiley: ;D It can change the meaning quite a lot! Minority? Actually, I'm the only one italian guy here! I don't count mounti1307, because even though he does live in Italy, he's not of Italian descent and his mother tongue is German. Then, there are a few girls, but no boys... I'm the italian king here! ;D

Well, I got this one software program, which teaches me some useful gems of phrases such as "Jeder Tag ist wertvoll" and "Drehen Sie Um." Joking aside though, for what works out to about 27 dollars after a rebate is a pretty cool program. So, I don't think software is such a bad idea.

So, since a bunch of you watch the German shows without speaking the language, any words you have learned by now? Aside from "schwul" I mean BTW, love this thread. It's like attending a General Assembly meeting at the United Nations, without the posturing and the various political agendas of course. Halunke = rascal, scoundrel ('s that right?) (I googled it and the word seemed offensive. Is it a matter of nuance? Tone of voice used?) Vasse = wait! (I know the spelling is wrong because google came back with Australian wines and Toronto real estate. I am not that linguistically-challenged.) Vas ist das? = What's going on? What are you talking about? (I think I'm in the ballpark, but I'm not sure. Again, wrong spelling.) Gotta get meself an En/Ger dictionary. That's it for starters. I wish there was a green smiley. I'd stick it right here to indicate how green with envy I am. You lot all seem to master so many languages. You impress the bejesus out of me. Chapeau!

Halunke is a somewhat old fashioned word. So I wouldn't rank it as insulting simply because it wouldn't really be the first or fifth word people would think of if they wanted to insult somebody. The way Olli used it was definitely to imply mischief but nothing like actual evil/violence and the like.
It's Warte and Was ist das?
Was ist das mean What is that? What's going on would be closer to Was ist los? or Was gibts?

I take two language classes; Chinese and German (Although I just strted the latter I can understand a bnch. Bu saying a sentnes, no way). Even though I know three Latin based Languages (English [It's vocab is latin based, sentence structure and grammer germanice] french and spanish) it think german is harder. Chinese makes sexe. German is full of Akkusativ and Nominativ and adjective stuff and Ugh. Chinese has almost nil grammer. Plug the words in, and Voila! Characters however are a different story. From VL i've gotten Ich leibe dich. Kuessen, Mineralwasser, Cola, Was ist das, Kappieren, Kapput, Vagonpanne (probably spelled wrong.)

Congrats on your wide knowledge of languages! But I find really hard thinking of English as a latin based language! Of course there are lots of Latin words, but most of them are used in formal language (or literature, law, etc...), while the germanic words are the most common in everyday speaking. Well, I'll share your experience soon, when I start studying German too, and all by myself! Quite a tough task, isn't it?

Well, I'll share your experience soon, when I start studying German too, and all by myself! Quite a tough task, isn't it? It's Rather hard to learn languages. English is pretty weird. Not to vaunt about the French, but the reason there are so many words that are Latin-based in English is because of the french, and William the conqueror the Duke of Normandy who invaded England Ich komme aus Frankreich (I come from France i.e. I am french) is always the first thing I say to any foreigner. Wouldn't want them to mistake me as a real american, just a Frenchman, american by birth and living there. Languages are my favorite thing to do. I want to learn as many as possible in my lifetime. My parents always say comments like "You can't do anything with languages" Pfffff. Two more years in America and I'm moving back to Europe I keep my brain space for Languages, I'm only 'gifted' in that and Math (Which I haaate) History and Science... not so great

I think I'm gifted as well, I just need to practise. I'm sorry but I reckon your parents are wrong, foreign languages are important. Then I suggest you should learn Italian as your next task!

Also, at the tolls in Venice and florence I learned these choice words 'arrivederci, grazie' For a little french: Il pleut des cordes chex moi, L'état a donné des avertisements pour Inondations (It raining cats and dogs at my house, the state has issued flood warnings)

A question for the german-speaking friends: I noticed that in Jo Weil's official website there's a section called "vita", where his personal details, such as date of birth, height, or favourite sport, are listed. It sounds pretty strange to me that an italian word is used, instead of the german "leben" or the english "life". Is it something usual? If I'm not wrong I read it somewhere else as well.

I think it's more a Latin word in the mind of Germans, just like one uses curriculum vitae. Vita is definitely a professional setting kind of word, to refer to your professional life or the parts of your life that would be interesting for a future employer.

Thanks Lola, your answer has been precise and quick, as usual! I wouldn't be surprised if in some website of an Italian actor, a similar section was called "Life". We use English even when there's no need at all. Poor Latin! Sometimes it's used more abroad that in its native land... * sighs*

From today's clip: Ollie says 'Liebe dich' (tell me if the spelling is wrong), without the subject pronoun 'Ich'. It would correspond to 'Love you', a re-affirmation of the feeling, but not a grand declaration.
