But they were boring and dull from the beginning, so it's nothing new.
Daytime has a real problem with their gay characters, most of the audience is pretty conservative, and the ones who like the gay characters are extremely protective of their couple, wich makes quite difficult to introduce challenges in a soapy way.
Nuke weren't boring till Ameera appeared, but then the show freaked out and always found ways to keep the intimacy to the minimum and make their obstacles an afterthought.
A real obstacle need some qualities and soaps are not in the mood to develop them, with straight couples is easy because the obstacle is already on the show, with all his/her past, but with gay couples they never take the time to make the new guy someone to root for, and that's really needed if you really want a real love triangle.
On the other hand Wilson (apart from being boring) are a newly weds, with a small kid, it's not that easy to introduce someone new out of the blue. In my opinion the best way to make an interesting storyline is first, create a character made to last, no matter if he doesn't make Wilson break, he will be a character important in other storylines (if a character screams expiration date, it's difficult to find interest in him). Second, create some problems in the couple, that's not difficult and make the possibility of the menace of the third way more believable.
Throwing a character in the middle of their relationship without any build up is just a waste of time

''Trouble is coming for our favorite gay couple in Salem.''It's only been a few months since Will Horton (Guy Wilson) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) walked down the aisle but their relationship is about to hit its first big road bump. And is there any ''Days of Our Lives'' viewer who will be surprised to find that Will's meddlesome mother Sami (Alison Sweeney) is involved? I was on the set of ''Days'' last week and Smith gave me the lowdown on how Will's journalistic ambition could spell trouble for everyone, including the young newlyweds. Also, the actor talked about working with co-star Guy Wilson and what Wilson likes to leave in Smith’s dressing room to get under his skin. Sounds like a married couple to me!" Freddie: "You know, Sonny really wanted to help his husband, so he kinda puts in a good word to get him this dream job. And you know, he went behind his back, but it was only cause it was to help him. And now, the article that he's writing is kind of trashing family a little bit, but it is...you know, it's the hard truth. So Sonny is just really concerned about the backlash that's gonna happen from Sami. When Sami hears somethin, she doesn't just go "Oh, okay" she makes a thing of it. So Will and Sonny, they're just trying to protect their family. And Sonny just wants to make sure everything stays on an even keel." Someone asks a question - they cut it out, but his response is:"I think it's like relationships in general. It's like you're trying to balance work, and your personal life at the same time, then you bring family into it. It's...you know, things get crazy. So I'm glad this is actually make-believe and not real life, cause this would be a lot of drama. So now that Will and Sonny have been married for a while, it's nice that it's not really even addressed anymore on the show like...such a plot point, such an issue. "Yeah". They're just another couple on the show."Yeah. Well I mean, that kinda has been happening every day. Like, for the past three and a half years, I've seen it go from like "Hey Freddie! What's it like playing the first gay character, to now it's like Sonny and Will are fighting, and it's...it's how it should be. You know, I think that the writers and the show and everybody just put together a very tasteful and amazing story. And uh...we're just like everyone else. How it should be, so I'm pumped about it." Questioner dude asks another question we don't get to hear, but surmising from his answer, it's about the recast from Chandler to Guy."Yeah, it's been almost a year. Time flies, time flies. No, we get along very well, um, he always comes in my dressing room, and it's just kinda the thing. So he just like hangs out in there, takes naps, and he always leaves his garbage in his room and it drives me up a wall, so it's kinda like we have this real...marriage happening. The kind of little things that we nit-pick on each other, so it's cool." Another off-mic question."I think half the time it's on purpose, yeah, cause I'll just walk in and there's stuff there for no reason. Just like an empty container, or a cup of coffee that's just cold and I'm just like 'Come on, throw it out', but he does it on purpose. Still another question we don't get to hear."Angry Sonny seems to be a fan favorite. I always see pictures of like...one of these like grilling faces that I give somebody. There's always captions of like 'Don't piss off Sonny!' And uh, so it's just kind of funny that...But no, I mean, the fans are great it's nice to feel all the love." Well I think that Sonny is usually is very even keeled, its nice when he does get to...something mumbled."Yeah". And theres a lot to explore about on the show. "Yeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah. And it's fun as an actor to just unload and to be able to yell without any repercussions. I mean, they yell 'Cut!' and it's all like...you know what I mean, so it's nice to be able to play angry every now and then." I'll put you on the spot, can you make an angry face? mumble mumble"An angry face? I can get really, really angry if you'd like me to." His facial expression starts to harden. "I'm dead serious." He looks serious at the questioner dude. "See, that's called "Acting".

September 1, 2014 Soap Opera Digest I can't help but laugh at this. They've already had massive communication problems in the past that blew up in their faces big time. This isn't exactly new.

Christopher Sean Friel is quite the hunk, and it would be interesting to have a gay character of colour, but what is the probability of that, given the show's insistence on making WilSon the most boring couple in Salem? Yeah, I'm not confident of our chances either.

If he's coming from Japan he most be connected to Either Kate/Lucas business (maybe as a model?) or to Stefano's business since he also does business in Japan. Could he be another Dimera son? There was no mention of a father. Hmmmm

They need something in their storyline, a kidnapping, a threesome, a blackmail, just something for god's sake

They need something in their storyline, a kidnapping, a threesome, a blackmail, just something for god's sake Well, Will and Sonny are getting another "hiatus", with Will going to Hollywood to help Sami and all her kids, while Sonny gives his support and blessings for him to leave. This is the second time that Will has left Sonny, in order to pursue his career. Yes, this is also about "helping Sami and the kids", but couldn't Caroline go in his place? Is Will taking Ari with him? Will's been whining about Sonny not showing morr support for him and his writing, yet his husband is letting his feelings go (again) and sees Will leave town. I know that it'll never happen, but I wish that Sonny would just once get plain tired of always being the one, who's thoughtful, understanding and supportive of Will and his wants all the time. I know that some folks hated how Adrienne was so against Will being with Sonny and their wedding, but she was right. Sonny's losing himself in his marriage to Will.

Frankly, i prefer something outrageous, like Will filling EJ's role and becoming an scheming mob, or Sonny transforming his cafe in a leather bar.
Well, now being serious, i hope Sonny has something to do in the meantime because they are on the verge of being the perfect candidates to be write off the show

I heard of rumor that Guy is going on reoccurring soon. Hopefully, when Will returns it will be a different actor in the role.

I don't think Will or Sonny will be completely written out of the show. They could be bumped down to reaccuring roles and the show could have them appear once or twice a month, having the same issues, which gets resolved by the end of their second appearance for that month.

Nothing's going to change if the show continues to write Will in the same way. No new recast will make the Will character or the WilSon pairing interesting, if the show still is afraid to write for the character and the pairing.

Guy is still tweeting pics from the set so he's still taping and the Wiki page that said he was being downgraded to recurring no longer says that.

Daytime has a big problem with their gays, at least american daytime. In europe the problem is the copycat effect, all the couples suddenly marry (even when it's crystal clear that it would be a disaster), or decide to have a baby (baby and marriage are poison to any gay couple on daytime) or of course you have the domestic violence storyline (with very few exceptions, absolutely bad storylines). But american daytime has a very different problem. The audience is very conservative so having gay characters is a risk (I don't think it is but it's pretty obvious that most writers expect to be rewarded simply for writting gay characters) and the main problem are the gay couple fans. If you have an audience that it's not too thrilled with gay characters and fans of the gay couple who react incredibly bad anytime someone who is a threat to the couple, you have the perfect combination for a totally boring storyline. In my opinion the best gay couple in tv right now are Ian and Mickey from Shameless. Both guys are cute but far from the ken dolls daytime (and primetime too) usually cast to play characters, but both are good actors and both have amazing chemistry with each other. And of course it's the writing. I mention Shameless because nothing remotely similar would work on daytime (and i'm not talking about the sex schemes). Gays on daytime have to be or saints or schemers in the bad girl tradition. A character like Mickey (Noel is really a fantastic actor because it's really his merit that a character that could easily be perceived as despicable ends being relatable) is absolutely the oposite of what daytime want to show. The problem with Wilson is that they are boring, they were boring at the beginning, and a marriage and a baby could make boring a couple that wasn't boring before. In my opinion they have zero future in the show, if a threat appear it will dissapear in no time, and in my opinion most of their fanbase (like what happened with Nuke) only want cute scenes and happy endings (even their fanfiction is incredibly boring and vanilla)

However, the writing is so poor that there would be no change in the actor did not help this. I am glad that Chandler is gone, at least he does not play in that mess.

I kind of wish Chandler was back as Will even though I found his chemistry with Freddie lacking. At least Chandler was interesting to watch even with the awful writing. My real preference is to see my avatar recast as Will. Maybe the new guy will come between WilSon. God, I hope so.

I couldn't even imagine an Ian and Mickey plot for a straight pairing on US daytime, so the possibility of that happening for a gay pairing is null and void. I try to imagine storylines from VL, AWZ, HOL or even EastEnders with their Johnny having a one night stand, with a young Italian during Gay Pride over the weekend. How shocked folks were in watching those scenes and not having Johnny or the Italian pledging never-ending love and devotion to one another. It's not just about the sex and physicality between these gay characters on US daytime. It's the fact that there's something, so unwritten rule that has them being treated and written differently from their straight counterparts. So, I wonder what Sonny will be up to while Will's in Hollywood? I hope that TBL starts up the Will Chronicles in his updates with Sonny. "Hey Comrade" always makes me laugh.

In my opinion they have zero future in the show, if a threat appear it will dissapear in no time, and in my opinion most of their fanbase (like what happened with Nuke) only want cute scenes and happy endings (even their fanfiction is incredibly boring and vanilla) Up until the 80's or 90's, Hollywood has had a history of not portraying gays favorably (see “The Celluloid Closet”). It is why gay Americans are sensitive about the issue. No producer wants GLAAD to issue a press release saying his/her show’s gay character is based on a stereotype and is a disgrace. That has probably killed more gay characters than angry letters from conservative viewers. I understand there are some people that like a bad boy. Not me. The character has to have some redeeming qualities to get me to watch. At least pair the bad boy with someone with a conscience. You can also have a character that usually means well, but makes a lot of poor choices. Maybe that makes them dull, but I still think there is a great need to have positive role models. Outside of NYC or LA, being out is still a struggle. You only have to read a local blog or comments on a news article to see evidence that some think gay marriage has progressed too far too fast in the past month. A domestic violence storyline is a non-starter. I’m not sure how it is outside the U.S., but we have little tolerance or forgiveness for violence between a man and a woman, and that can probably be extended to a gay couple. Chris Brown and a long list of NFL players need to hang it up already. Specifically to Wilson, I keep hoping Gabi gets released from prison early and takes Arianna with her to NYC or someplace far, far away. Will and Sonny were forced to settle down before they even got started. And I keep thinking Will is going to start acting a lot more like his mother. With E.J. and Sami leaving, Days has numerous problems going forward. All of its couples are either separated (John & Marlena, Stefano & Kate) or are in the very early stages of romance (Chad & Jordan, Abigail & Ben, Hope & Aiden, J.J. & Paige). The newer actors just don’t have the acting chops either. Maybe the more established characters/actors need to hook up (Rafe & Nicole?, Daniel & Eve?).

It's not the bad boy, it's the layers of grey. Sonny right now is almost a saint (or a doormat, like you prefer).
I remember some years ago it started to air in spain a sit com about a building neighbourhood, it was based loosely on a comic. There was a gay couple, and frankly i thought the worse. One of the characters was totally an stereotype, but surprise, the character was more than an stereotype, he was funny, he was relatable, he was hysterical but over all he was lovable. And he was all that because the writing was good and the actor was (is) good
The problem with daytime is the writing is bad (or very bad) and the characters (not only the gays) are pure sterotype, and sometimes even switch stereotypes. The gays of daytime are so pure that Bryan was watched as a villiam when he only wanted Sonny (and frankly he was way more suitable for him that Will). I know that you can fill of gay characters the soap, but making the two gays endgame even before they kiss each other is a big mistake. All over the globe daytime is repeating the same mistakes with their gay storylines. To make a marriage or adopting a child storyline interesting you need quality writing (and probably good dosis of humour), to make a domestic violence storyline interesting you need to be subtle. Qualities that are unknown on daytime.
And it's not a question of being the bad guy, because in that case you have a problem, the same problem if the bad guy is the only asian, or the only black, or the only latino, because you are using tokenism in the worst way. But you can make your gay characters universally pure, resolve all their problems (and Wilson have a lot of problems) in half episode, and expect nothing more than they being the vortex of boredom.
When i used Ian and Mickey as example, that wasn't what i expect of daytime. I used them because they are perfect to show that characters with flaws (tons of flaws in Mickey's case) can be interesting, and people can love them. Perfection is not real and is boring. Creating a good character doesn't mean he can't defend himself, or he need to be a doormat, or he can only be a suport his unbearable friends. It's easier to create bad interesting guys, but you can write an interesting good guy. Luke Snyder was that guy for a while, the problem with Sonny is that he was never developed (something that happened with Noah too), and the problem with Will is that he is totally inconsistent as character. General Hospital did a good job avoidid the "great love story" couple storyline introducing three gay characters, the problem is none of them have enough screentime to do anything
