Anybody mention “Une petite zone de turbulences” (“A spot of bother”) yet? I was pleasantly surprised by this 2009 little French movie. A good, simple and at times painfully challenging depiction of family. The son happens to be gay and his romantic storyline is told like the others within the context of the family, so, it’s not at the center but it’s part of a well-crafted whole. At first glance from the trailer it seems funny, but there is deep sadness too, yet it seeps through as seamlessly as the comedy. No one and nothing is really quite perfect, and they all are aware of it. I really enjoy it when French cinema goes for simple and light but somehow deep and intricate enough to affect. I also liked that the end of the movie does not really signal the end of the story; just like in life, it’s expected to keep going. Considering the stories told, one might expect big climaxes and overtly dramatic occurrences for effect, but the excess never really overtakes anything. If you look closely, buildups are there but not overdone, which oddly feels like a relief, and the actors managed that beautifully. Michel Blanc and Miou Miou are great as always, and some people may recognize a couple of Clara Sheller actors.

has anyone gone to any gay film festivals? i went to the Frameline film festival here in SF, but only went to two screenings. Judas Kiss and a short film screening which included "I was a Teenage Werebear." yes, for Sean Paul Lockhart. but i missed most of the other movies and really wanted to see Private Romeo. anyone see it? wondering if it is good.
as for Judas Kiss, as hard as i tried, i could not connect to the main storyline...and for me Sean's moments were the best (but he can practically do no wrong in my eyes, and now even more so since he was super sweet when i met him). i guess i would say overall it was just "okay".

There's a screening party on August 13 in Vancouver for Judas Kiss, as well as another show on Aug 18. Kinda intrigued by the storyline, and hoping to meet Sean Lockhart as well. I'm glad you had a good experience meeting him! He is so yum. It's gotten pretty good reviews. Other screenings are on their facebook page: www.facebook.com/judaskissmovieand website judaskissmovie.com/Anyone else in Vancouver want to attend the screening party and meet the cast? PM me!

Ok.. I've just seen La Otra Familia. It was a wonderful movie which I very much liked.. until the ending. The ending just completely ruined the movie for me Slightly spoiler-ish, highlight to read: I was expecting a happy ending, maybe this ending was more realistic, but I still didn't like it. NOBODY ended up happy! Everyone had their lives ruined :S
Also, I liked the fact that the gay couple was shown in a positive light.. again, until the ending. I won't say what happens, but frikkin hell.. are you kidding me?!?!! so yeah, the gay couple was ruined too.
I would NOT recommend this movie. The ending completely ruined everything, and I was so looking forward to this movie too. I thought it would be great, but I was VERY disappointed
I guess it did show that out of everyone taking care of Hendrix, the gay couple did the best job and was the most fit for the job, even though society didn't like it, but then again.. even that "message" was ruined by the horrible ending where they ended up in prison and Hendrix was sent to the orphanage.

so a few days ago i saw a movie from 2009 called "The War Boys". It is an AMAZING movie!! it isn't necessarily a "gay" film. It just happens to have gay characters in it, but the film's plot revolves around something else entirely. Three friends (Greg, David, and George) have been friends for years and as a way to make some money, and so David can get back at his dad in a way, they decide to steal one of the trucks David's dad owns in this trucking company. It is supposed to have black market tvs from mexico in it but that isn't really true... On top of this storyline, Greg falls for a girl that owns a donut store, and David and George face up to how they have been feeling about each other for years. The scenes with David and George are so beautiful and touching and really well done!! Has anyone else seen it? if you haven't please check it out! Netflix has it on instant play! I watched it 5 times in 2 days!!! =D

I haven't seen the whole movie, but I did come across a number of individual scenes (and one good compilation) of The War Boys on YouTube recently. Looks good.

I am really looking forward to seeing Alan Brown's new film 'Private Romeo'. It will be so good to see young men playing the parts as the fact that only men could portray women at the time must have influenced the Bard. Just from the trailer I have found new meaning int he words.
On another disappointing point. I viewed the trailer on youtube again to find really nasty comments by some ofboys who go to school where the film was made. One said the Admiral does not hold with the message of the film: looks like they are struggling for money and only allowed it to be filmed there for that reason. Apparently only 16% passed their exams. They say that prejudice comes through ignorance so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised.
I am also very happy that TLA uk is releasing the film on dvd. As a UK college sponsored it that only seems right anyway.

It's truly an amazing movie. The central theme was captivating. And yes, the ending. I cried too. I was not expecting that but I understood why it happened. All the characters were on point and the actors did an amazing job. Love it.

For anyone who has seen the movie "Yossi & Jagger", matan4il had mentioned awhile back that there would be a sequel coming out and I have a bit more information about it here (cross-posted from the Til the Wedding news thread): The title is now showing up as "Ha-Sippur Shel Yossi" (Yossi's Story) and is in post-production according to imdb.com with a 2012 release date. As of last month according to The Jerusalam Post, I also found the following article about the filming of the new movie: Back to Yossi
A visit to the set of Eytan Fox's sequel to his 2002 hit 'Yossi and Jagger,' where the cast and crew are like family, and the film finds its star older, wiser and more open about his sexuality. By Nirit Anderman Published 01:24 21.04.11
"Ohad is walking too fast. Again. Concentrate, Ohad, tense your body," director Eytan Fox calls from his chair in front of the monitor. He waves his hand. "Action."
Actor Ohad Knoller, dressed like a doctor, with a stethoscope around his neck, has a worried look on his face - as called for in the scene. He begins walking alongside the nurses' station. Cinematographer Guy Raz holds the camera on his shoulder and walks in front of the actor, struggling to keep up. Cut. "You walked too fast again," Fox tells Knoller, "and you also lost some of the inner movement. Again. Relax your forehead a little, Ohad. Action!"
The new and luxurious heart center at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital is still deserted. Workers complete the finishing touches, cleaning crews calmly polish the corridors; only on the third floor is the activity at its height, where the crew of the tentatively titled "Yossi's Story" films take after take, scene after scene. Knoller leaves one of the rooms and enters the hallway, along with actress Orly Zilbershatz.
"Thank you doctor," she says to him, putting on her coat while walking. "You're welcome," he replies. He still looks worried. "See you next year," she says, as she walks away.
Actor Lior Ashkenazi, also dressed as a doctor, looks at the two in surprise. "Is that her? What's the matter with you?" he asks Knoller in a whisper. "Listen, you owe me for that catheterization with Cohen - he's so phlegmatic it takes him two hours to find the artery," Ashkenazi says, but Knoller suddenly rushes after the woman.
Ten years after collaborating on "Yossi and Jagger," Knoller and Fox once again find themselves on opposite sides of the camera, creating a sequel to that successful film. Yossi, the tough company commander who had an intense affair with a male officer serving under him in a snowy outpost in South Lebanon, is now an admired and dedicated doctor. He devotes all his energy to his work, to avoid confronting his loneliness and the demons from his past.
He still hasn't gotten over the death of his lover (played by Yehuda Levi ) at the end of the previous film, and when Jagger's mother (Zilbershatz ) shows up at the hospital, his world is shaken.
Occupying questions
"Yossi and Jagger," screened in 2002, received the Ophir Prize for best drama and best actor (Levi ). The film was distributed in 15 countries, with Knoller named best actor at the Tribeca Film Festival. Last Thursday, Fox said he and producer Amir Harel came up with the idea to make a sequel a few months ago.
"We wanted to work together again... We felt like making another film, something small and immediate," says Fox. "Of course it means working with smaller budgets, without public funding, with a small crew. But I've already worked with all the actors in this film in the past, and they're like family."
In cinematic terms, this is really a lightning production. Fox started to formulate the idea only about six months ago, recruited Itay Segal (the TV critic for Yedioth Ahronoth ) to write the script, and cast Knoller and Zilbershatz (who worked with Fox in "Song of the Siren" ) in the main roles. Other major roles went to Ashkenazi (who starred in "Walking on Water" ) and Oz Zehavi, who plays Yossi's new lover.
Harel is producing the film along with Moshe Edri and United King Films, on a $500,000 budget and support from the Yes cable company and the Reshet TV franchise. But the desire to create a small, quick film was not Fox's only motive.
"I suddenly understood that the issues that came up in 'Yossi and Jagger' are very important to me, that I wanted to address them again," Fox says. "Although in the film Yossi is 35, not 45 like me, the questions that preoccupy him are my questions as well: on maturing, finding meaning in life, and how to create that meaning. It's important to share such issues, like how important it is to accept yourself - and I don't necessarily mean in terms of sexuality. In this film, Yossi is still examining how completely he accepts himself as a gay man... but more than that, he's dealing with trauma. He lost Jagger and is stuck in that place.
'Here come the tears'
In a short break in filming, Knoller, whose career has flourished thanks to "Yossi and Jagger," claims there is no real connection between the character he played in the first film and the one he plays in "Yossi's Story."
"On the one hand, the Yossi in this film is more out of the closet. But he's also far less sure of himself," he says. "In the first film, he conveyed far more confidence, he was a kind of leader because of his job as an IDF commander, and here he's one of a team of doctors - and not the senior one. In the first film he still didn't know whether he was really gay ... but in this film it's clear that he is, and that's how he lives his life. The big question is what kind of life it's going to be."
Zilbershatz, who didn't appear in the previous film, is happy and amused on set, but when discussing her character, she becomes melancholy.
"When you lose a child, and suddenly you discover that there are all kinds of things that you didn't know about him, that you didn't have time to get to know, that intensifies the sense of loss," she says. "The thought that your child was all alone when he experienced something as difficult as coming out of the closet - and 10 years ago, when the world was even less tolerant - is tough."
Segal, the screenwriter, who is sitting next to her, looks at her and says, "Here come the tears. She starts crying as soon as she talks about it."
Knoller admits that he's scared by the fact that this is a a sequel to a successful film. "The first film was excellent, and so to go and make another film now means telling a story you don't really have to tell. So on the surface, why get into that? It's scary."
Fox also says many people warned him against creating a sequel. "But when I traveled all over the world with the actors, when we screened it abroad, people always asked what would happen to Yossi. People said that he ends the film in a bad place."
"In this film, Yossi is supposed to emerge from where he got stuck. At the same time, I feel it's an independent film that stands on its own, and follows a character who now lives in a different Israel," Fox explains. "'Yossi and Jagger' addressed the withdrawal from Lebanon, confronting the trauma of the first Lebanon war, and now I'd like to examine the situation 10 years on. Has Israel changed? Is it a more liberal, progressive, advanced place? And if so, why is Yossi unable to change?
"There's a dissonance here between a society that has changed and the character of Yossi, who is stuck in 2000, when Israeli society was more macho, less accepting. In the sequel, Oz Zehavi represents the new Israeli gay man, who can be both gay and an IDF officer, and doesn't feel that these two things are conflicting. On the contrary: He's proud of who he is." www.haaretz.com/culture/arts-leisure/back-to-yossi-1.357133www.jpost.com/ArtsAndCulture/Entertainment/Article.aspx?id=253362

Does the Koran really call for homosexuals to be stoned to death? That's mind-boggling. The weird thing is that every account I've read of Arab countries says that homosexual behavior between men is rampant. It took a lot of courage to make that movie so I'm going to make every effort to see it.

There was a documentary on British tv about the Dancing Boys of Afganistan. It may have been shown on US tv as well? What the men got up to with the boys you can imagine. I suppose it doesn't count though because it is a tradition and the boys are not seen as men. I look forward to seeing Out Loud but will probably have to wait until it, hopefully, comes out on DVD.

Just watched the movie "Brotherhood".
I have to say it was an interesting movie to say the least. The two leads "Jimmy" and "Lars" were amazing. The acting was phenomenal from those two. I liked the brother of Jimmy too. I have to say that was a sort of bad ending to the movie. I guess we'll just have to imagine what happens next.

Ok.. I've just seen La Otra Familia. It was a wonderful movie which I very much liked.. until the ending. The ending just completely ruined the movie for me I know you posted this a while ago, but I just had to say something because I watched it too, and just like you said, yes it was nice and all but not so much the climax. Though I did like the result. and since I don't want to spoil anything, highlight to read So Hendrix DID end up back with the gay couple. And I LOVED the message it gave because that's how it is still in Mexico. I've been surprised of what I've seen on XY and this movie too. I mean, to see men like that is more sinful in Mexico than in the US. I know Mexico is making more and more Progress as I've been fallowing somewhat the LGBT right there, and the marriage can only be done in the capital nowhere else, though it is recognized in every state as that came with package as well. So I'm glad because of that. I thought everything looked real. And I actually know a lot of the cast from other movies and Novelas they've participated in.
And the maid even changed her way of thinking, and I believe that to be very positive. It shows that a gay family can prevail, but you also have to think that Hendrix had a mom then, and he hadn't been adopted by them so the reaction of the people is what I believe to be in Mexico. I guess you need to have a background in some movies to understand what's going on. After all, the target audience is mainly those of the country of origin where the movie is produced.
